The Lobster – Fun with Color!!
A very neglected 4-Plex in San Diego became a dramatic before & after project just 2 blocks from Pacific Beach! Long-term tenants were relocated to re-purpose this property to a combination of 3 long-term rentals and one larger short-term unit called Lobster. We did everything from remodeling design, all finish, furniture and artwork selections right down to the kitchen utensils and bed & bath linens. In addition, we suggested that each unit have a name and proceeded to have bronze plaques cast and mounted on painted wooden panels.
The kitchen was concealed from the living room and so we opened the wall to create a breakfast bar and connect the two spaces. The expansive feeling is brighter, sharing more light from both rooms and creates a welcoming arrival upon entering. New commercial-grade inter-locking vinyl plank floors in a warm, variegated grey offer a durable surface and suggest the weathered appearance of the seaside environs. Engineered countertops in a faux-concrete charcoal color ties with the floor and does not compete with the rest of the color palette. The new, crisp white interior is accented with turquoise and punctuated with red to give a nod to the Lobster theme. Inasmuch as the Maine Lobster is not of this southern California marine scene, the owner lives in Maine and therefore wanted a personal connection to this precious family property. Each piece of artwork and decorative accessory was specifically selected to support the seaside scene and Lobster theme.
The color scheme of white, turquoise and red is repeated throughout the bathroom and bedrooms with a combination of custom and production design elements. The bunkbed allowed for more floorspace in the second bedroom – but has a double bed on the bottom for sleeping options for two or three people. A nightstand lamp in the bunkbed room is a glass vessel that opens on the top into which we placed seashells gathered from the local beach and adding a carved wooden shark just for fun! The living sofa is a queen sleeper. So the Lobster sleeps six. A pair of pull-up ottoman are placed beneath the TV console in the living room to add extra seating for larger gatherings.
