Repurposed and Renewed
A man found himself empty-nesting and with great encouragement from his sister, decided to make long overdue interior design improvements to his decades old home. This small rambler was built in the late 50s or 60s and was ready for an update.
We found a fabulous curvilinear sectional through a local secondhand source to make the primary design statement and seating arrangement for the living room. With a new arc lamp and drum coffee table, a splash of artwork, and custom throw pillows, created the new scene.
A ledge with the base faced in brick, which matched the exterior of the house and interior fireplace wall, was discussed for removal, but there was something intriguing about repeating the brick and having that vintage element remain. With a new granite top, it became the perfect entry piece to gather mail, drop keys, etc.
The kitchen transformed without changing its footprint. New custom cabinets, appliances, finishes, and natural granite countertops were a stunning addition to tie together the white cabinets, black backsplash, and warm tones from the new flooring. Three bar stools were also discovered via resale with sturdy clean lined cherry frames. Now sprayed black, they read like fine lacquer furniture with beautiful geometric chenille fabric upholstered on the seats. They contribute another creative, custom furnishing element. Notice the mottled black tile used for the backsplash. The subtle variations in the color of the glaze provide a casual elegance.
A vintage solid wood pedestal table, once painted white, was also refinished beautifully in black. It is a wonderful centerpiece for the dining space. Four secondhand dining chairs were also sprayed black and upholstered with stunning new textural upholstery fabric for seats and backs. It must be said that fine workmanship and attention to detail in our refinishing and upholstery are the key to presenting these found “treasures” as valuable assets to the interior design.
This project illustrates the value of repurposing existing furniture, whether owned or acquired, resulting in unique custom details. The hall bathroom also received custom cabinets, all new fixtures, and a full wall width of mirror to expand the space. Two different new wall tiles were installed floor to ceiling to finish the space.
New LVT flooring throughout the house was a practical finish material for this man, his dog, and his iguana!
