Sensitive, But Not So Subtle, Kitchen Makeover
A simple little 50s kitchen was familiar and comfortable for this sentimental homeowner. Yet, they knew it needed upgrading and minor repairs and decided to pay homage to the simplicity of the cabinet style (although flatpanels were replaced with drop panels) and the paint color was replicated to match the original. Existing floor tiles remained while the room was otherwise gutted of all cabinets and appliances. A new door to the outside adds more lighting to the space. Relocating the refrigerator into a hot water heater closet expanded the space exponentially. The water heater was consolidated to one side and framed in with a new louvered door, leaving room for an open refrigerator niche. Moving the refrigerator allowed for an expansion of the upper and lower cabinets and extending the countertop. Workspace was increased and improved with new engineered stone countertops. The curvilinear wood valances were replicated, new cabinet pulls were selected and wall colors too. To complement the existing floor tile, a terracotta and cream Talavera tile was used as backsplash and wall treatment. A little bit of retro with a little bit of modern with a little bit of regional folk art makes this space a sensitively successful remodel.
