Colors are all around and I am certainly clued into them. As a designer, my love of color, design, art and connecting all things through these elements, influences all that I do. From interiors to tablescapes to clothes to cars – cars?
Well, my interest has been peaked with the very apparent trend in car colors the last few years of what I call the “latte effect.” Picture a rich dark cup of coffee blended with dairy and the result is a milky derivation of the original color. Cars of all makes and models have adopted this very interesting approach to introducing new colors on the market. Adding white to a hue will “milky” it down. Indigo with white softens the deep blue/purple hue. Rich olive green is softened by the “latte effect” of adding white to the original color.
These decidedly softened colors present a new range and offering of color options. Brilliant, I think. It takes any color we have known on a car and creates an entire stratum of new colors never before seen all at one time as though a newly discovered color palette.
Intense charcoal becomes a softer version of itself – still strong and powerful, yet with an eased edge. Blues, greens, golden tones all have their softened versions driving down our roads with a softer shade weaving in and out of the traffic of our lives. Sprinkled in parking lots, these soft colors are becoming a fascinating contribution to the mix of common colors.
I found an article by Peter Bohr, an award-winning automotive journalist who penned a piece about how the color of a car could affect its resale value. It makes perfectly good sense, when color affects almost everything we encounter. Color attracts. People respond to color and make selections based on color.
This milky cobalt blue is rich and confident.
A shirt, a dress – a wall color, or bedspread, people pick paint, clothes, and home décor with a tendency toward a color preference. Do you have what you might consider to be your “favorite” color?
Colors mean something – like red being attention-getting or urgent, warm to hot. While blue is calming, cool, and conservative. It is interesting to observe how often the color choices of things in a person’s world reflect that individual’s identity or, more interestingly, their alter ego – an opposite expression of their outward persona.
Kate Smith, a color consultant quoted in Peter Bohr’s article “Colorful Considerations,” states “Color is emotional and personal. On a canvas as large as a car, color shares something about the car’s owner with the rest of the world.” Bohr goes on to identify the most popular colors for cars White and Black. That to me means “blank canvas”. A clean blank white canvas or a bold blank black canvas – neutrals to go with anything and allow the owner to find their accents elsewhere. The “go with anything colors.” One open and fresh, the other closed and perhaps mysterious…

Red cars perplex me. I cannot drive a burgundy car. I have difficulty even riding in one. Due to my sensitivity in this department, when renting cars we would specify, in advance, that we did not want a red car. That was to avoid saying that a fiery Ferrari would be fine, but that burgundy sedan is not going to fly. And despite the fact that the chances of leasing a fiery Ferrari – or exciting shades of cherry-bomb red were quite limited, we were safe to avoid any misinterpretation about the shade of red – so we de-selected all of them.
But what I have NOT seen is the latte effect applied to any red car color. Have you? To take a burgundy and milky it down would be a resulting dusty rose color. To apply the latter effect to a fiery red would result in a carnation pink/coral. Depending upon that original hue, the softened color would vary, but regardless, I have not seen this introduced on the market. Perhaps preliminary studies showed that other than dedicated Mary Kay sales associates attaining the highest level of reward, the pink tones were not big car picks. (Since having started this missive, I have seen a softened burgundy, but it is apparently still a rare find in the new color palette of cars.)

Yet, having a favorite color or what you consider to be your favorite color might not apply to all things in your world. As I have always said about design and color, decisions are usually based upon context whether you are aware of it or not.
For the last 20+ years, my car color has been white. To me it is freeing. It cleanses my palette, (intended play on words). I know I won’t tire of it, and it allows me to approach and own that blank canvas when the entire rest of my world is ruled and stimulated by color and my constant critique, application of it or response to it.
As an exercise, think of what your favorite color might be. If you are super color sensitive like I am, you might consider that you have many favorite colors – usually based upon context – but for this exercise, pick one and then see where you have selected to use it in your world. Is it the color of your car or wall or favorite outfit? Don’t be surprised if it is not any of those seemingly significant things in your world. But check the the context. If it is on one or more of those things, ask yourself what about that “favorite” color resonates – makes you comfortable or even joyful. Then see what other color choices do not include that color and ask “why?” You might be surprised that this is fun and illuminating. It will provoke your thoughts about color and choices and perhaps heighten your awareness of the colors around you.
Wherever you may be…it’s the time of year when traditions are so much a part of everyone’s holiday experiences. And with that opening sentence – no doubt some of yours come to mind.
Traditions, of course, are not limited to holidays – but for
purposes of this season, it is the primary focus of this missive. Interestingly,
over the past few weeks, I have had a few people ask me about home decor and specifically
starting or perpetuating holiday traditions. I found it so compelling because
traditions are created from repeat practices and experiences.
Fond memories of family friends and their annual tradition of making warm and frothy Tom and Jerrys! I found these vintage china mugs just like the ones from my memories. Have have recently seen them re-created – new – just like these! Perhaps its time to start our own tradition of Tom and Jerrys for the holidays!
You can begin to practice things that become traditions – that’s the key. Of the recent conversations, one person approached me about a week before Thanksgiving. He was single, hosting a few friends and didn’t know where to begin. Could I help? The other inquiry was from a couple of years ago as a young woman who was not from New Mexico found herself here, newly married and in a new home. How was she to create the feeling of Christmas? The answers to both of these queries are at the end …
As is true with all consultation whether it is interior design, medical, self-help, physical fitness, IT…it all begins with questions. The consultant must ask questions to establish information that will guide them to make their recommendations. Here are 4 Tips for Approaching Traditions that will begin the conversation.
Perpetuating a Tradition: Memories are personal references that are the basis for traditions. The repeat performance of these various acts establish traditions. Continuing to practice the traditions insures that they repeat as each like-kind of event unfolds. It takes effort to continue to re-create traditions, but to lose the pattern can become irretrievable. It can be an onus or a joy to perpetuate traditions. I would prefer to embrace the latter! Ideally, any tradition that you chose to perpetuate should be a joy.
This vintage set was given to me by a dear friend. It held precious memories from her grandmother having served hot cocoa from it every Christmas. My friend’s experiences dated back to the 1920s. The set preceded her memory…as her grandmother, born in the last quarter of the 1800s owned it for years prior. We enjoy hot cocoa from it nearly every Christmas morning!
Creating New Traditions: Establishing the approach that perpetuating a tradition should be a joy or the act of something that brings joy, the same is true with creating a tradition. Seems obvious that you wouldn’t want to create a traditional around something that does not bring you joy. But you might be surprised. I have recently learned that sometimes people think that they begin something that is a common practice to create a version for themselves, when in fact it is a perceived obligation rather than a joy. Don’t force it- don’t feel obliged to begin a practice just because others do it. Experience, invent or witness something that brings you joy and replicate it. You might recall it from your past, find it in a scene from a movie or experience at someone else’s home, derive it from participating in an activity or, of course, discovering internet ideas that abound. If something interests you to the extent that you want to practice it – then do it!If you enjoy it enough, you will perpetuate it and it will become a tradition.
This little Santa Doll was handmade by a friend of mine when her kids – now grown with kids of their own – were kids. Not originally intended to be a “Crazy Santa,” his accidental facial expression resulted in his name – held now for over three decades. He comes out every Christmas as an amusing family tradition.
Modifying Traditions: We all need to determine how much we want to take on, how much we want to invest (in time or money) and how we achieve the same or similar results to create the joy. If traditions become too complicated or difficult, it might be time to re-think them. Rather than discard them, modify them. The time to discard a tradition is when it no longer brings you joy. But before that might happen and if the event/activity or degree of difficulty challenge your want to perpetuate the tradition, consider modifying it to suit your changing needs, circumstances and enjoyment.
This might happen if you move away from the context in which the tradition originally occurred, change in participants – if any, change in interests, physical or financial limitations…if the tradition still brings joy – find a way to achieve that with the necessary modification. Circumstances alter cases…like where you might have lived or are living at the time. Your fondest memories might be of chilly temperatures, warm fireplaces and the scent of pine trees…then you relocate to the tropics! This provides an opportunity to retain some of the original traditions and introduce some new. Not to mention, you might move to a different country where an entirely new set of traditions will present themselves – or just the different words for familiar favorites. Even without changing languages, in England they hang stockings at the foot of each bed rather than the mantle. Father Christmas is their Santa Claus. The list of similarities and slight differences goes on…
As I walked in the park last weekend, I spotted this fun, dangling snowman! So I stopped to inquire and capture a few shots. This family celebrates their son’s birthday every year with a piñata. Born on Christmas Day, they select another day close-by to have the piñata portion of the party. A family tradition.
No snowy scene for snowball fights or skiing? Toss a ball or frisbee, take a hike or bike, instead.
No enormous turkey? Roast a breast or a more manageable duck
or chicken.
Become a vegetarian? Using the same type of familiar meal
service and table dressings, modify the menu.
Not convenient to cut and haul a tree from the wild? Buy one
instead. Real tree a hassle? Become the proud owner of a magnificent fake tree-
with a bit of pine-scented room spray! In my case, I occasionally give myself a “bye”
break from putting up our tree (Although I love my tradition of collecting
silver ornaments, of which I have dozens). So the “modification” is
to have a magnificent, tall poinsettia on the entry table and several others scattered
throughout the house to punctuate the interior with splashes of red.
No formal dining room? Gather on cushions around a coffee
table – even if it means a piece of plywood from Home Depot on cinderblocks
with a paper tablecloth! Candles and a centerpiece will set the scene.
Sharing Traditions
Gifting things that represent your traditions is a wonderful way to share. Obviously, baking and sharing traditional delicacies is prime. Making or finding ornaments to gift is nice. I offer cuttings of our family’s Christmas cactus. My grandmother always kept one or more plants from the original plant that was in her family home in Youngstown, New York. She was born in 1892 and her grandmother remembered the plant and told my grandmother that it preceded her in that same house. We don’t know how far back it goes, but at least mid 1800s. I have kept cuttings and grown mature plants from the very plants that my grandmother had her entire life of over 100 years and kept all the while we were growing up in the same house for 20+ years and now my 40 years since! Gifting a traditional food or a CD you compile of favorite recordings, sharing plant cuttings, passing along a treasured possession – all are ways to share traditions.
But what if you are starting out? Memories from childhood might be the basis for beginning your own adult traditions – whatever the springboard, it should be fun to establish your own holiday traditions.

a concert, background music evoking memories for the occasion…
Decoration: Dressing your interior and exterior for the event(s)…
Hanukkah traditions, decorations – the brilliant blues and metallic accents…Color plays a big part in traditions and their interpretation and practices.
Collecting: Adding to collections…handmade series, vintage pieces, new releases…
Remember the guy before Thanksgiving? He had no formal dining room. He was having 7 friends gather. He wanted to do some semblance of what he regarded as a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. I asked him how he preferred to gather – standing with cocktails and appetizers grazing throughout the evening or a “sit-down” approach? He really wanted the feeling of sitting down to feast. In light of not having a formal dining area – and as it turned out, no coffee table either, I advised that he gather on cushions around a coffee table. Since he didn’t have one, I suggested that he go to Home Depot and get a 48″ square cut piece of plywood to position on top of a double stack of cinder blocks. I went in search of finding a table cloth and 8 large cushions (pillows) , votive candles and a centerpiece comprised of a bright yellow mum plant in a basket, with a few mini pumpkins and fall leaves. The scene was set. He used his own plates and utensils, white paper napkins and a package of orange cocktail napkins. He planned the meal and asked for each person to contribute an item that was special for them. After all the dishes were identified, he prepared the main dish, a casserole of boneless turkey breasts surrounded by his traditional favorite, Pepperidge Farm stuffing – baked and beautiful – and two other things that were not being contributed by his friends – canned cranberry jelly (ha ha) and a pumpkin pie that he purchased from a local bakery. Voila!
The gal entering her first Christmas as an adult was not from New Mexico nor was her young husband . They had a new home here and the local traditions were not in her realm of traditions. She wanted a large tree but did not own one single Christmas ornament. She bought a live-cut tree and we bought strings of mini white lights, a couple dozen red feathered cardinal bird ornaments, candy canes and white ribbon. She tied white bows on the tree and scattered the red birds all over it. I cannot believe that I can’t find the photo of the finished product – but it was a memorable solution for a first Christmas presentation.
This year I captured a quick shot of this tree in a friend’s house that reminded me of that young woman’s first Christmas tree. In vogue this year are the bare, stick-like trees that offer twinkly accents and an airy presentation of ornaments of choice and here featured are the very similar red cardinals!
Collecting art, investing in art, loving art, designing with
art…one aspect or all of the above, art in interior design has many facets. I
have written previously about and presented a workshop about “I want a
piece of art to go with my red sofa,” a kind of raspberry in the face of curators,
collectors, critics and appraisers who would never take or condone that
approach. But the desire and need exists and as a interior designer it is
wonderful to work with artists who can and want to respond to cues, take on
commissions and create for specific parameters.
Contrary to opinions from the high-brows, this is not to say that these artists lack artistic integrity or meaningful self-expression. Their value is as any other – determined by what the market will bear. The basis for this writing is that we work with many artists who love their work. And creating it (even under direction) brings them and their patrons joy.

interiors over the years and are never disappointed in the quality and creativity
of her pieces.

With so many mass-produced art offerings at the trendy home
decor stores, it is refreshing to encounter new clients who are at the start of
their nesting years, establishing their own domains, selecting things that
bring them comfort and identity and who’s appreciation lies in acquiring original art.
Designing an interior is about comfort and personal identity. It is about surrounding oneself with things that work – both functionally and aesthetically. Individual’s requirements, in either of those departments, can vary greatly – but suffice it to say, each person or couple or family unit creates a home environment based upon their likes and needs (and budget).
Enter the interior designer. When calling on the assistance
of someone outside the intimacy of the home, the client is hoping for and
expecting a successful custom-tailoring of their requests based upon the
experience of the professional.
When designing an interior, it is exciting to use existing
pieces already owned by the client. It is gratifying to arrange and place those
items in ways not yet imagined – thereby justifying the investment in design
consultation. After an intense session of rearranging furniture, artwork and
decorative accessories the “ta-da” moment is one of near instant
gratification and satisfaction.
When an interior needs a little something to pull it
together, fill a gap, create an accent or establish a focal point, it is great
fun to engage the creativity of an artist to custom design a piece to fit the
need. Approaching an artist for the express purpose of acquiring a piece of their
work to enhance a space is an exciting
venture. It is a personal connection between artist and patron that creates a
communion, a bond.
Here I took inspiration from a single panel that Forbes had constructed and requested a series of 9 panels grouped in a grid to make a larger statement on the wall. The interest created from a grid of images adds movement and dimension to this series already complex with sculpted texture and applied layers.
Color, texture, size, style, subject (or not) all are aspects of art that are to be considered for the personal interests of both artist and patron. If the patron has selected an artist to approach about a commission it is as a result of experiencing their work and appreciating it. The artist, in response, is to accept the parameters of the request and enjoy the challenge and process of creating the intended/desired finished product.
The intensity of this rich red wall was decided early in the design process. As we built layers of existing elements and introduced new pieces, the desire for a custom installation became apparent. This Urban Elements series was a collaborative effort between Forbes and me to provide a bit of an edgy, industrial vibe to this eclectic urban loft. Note too that the end table and coffee table were locally crafted for the project by Kirt Kirkpatrick
Forbes’ creativity is rooted in pattern, color and texture.
Primarily non-objective, her pieces are compositions of movement and dimension.
Working with a layering technique, she builds her action with a collage of
papers and fibers, paint and stain. Action is key when describing Forbes’ artwork.
She creates for herself, but when called upon to collaborate
on a project, her eager curiosity for what might result is enthusiastic and
ever-promising. About her style and self-expression she states “When I
have created a joyfulness and vibrancy in the work, I know I ahve created an
experience I wish to share.”
When asked…
1. How/when/why did you start your abstract technique of
layering colors and textures?
Forbes has always been drawn to color as a means of her personal expression, once she “experimented with acrylic materials that would hold a texture and started playing with those using combs and rubber spatulas and sticks to mark in the materials” she was hooked. “Metallic and interference paints call to me — so I began to combine the over the textured backgrounds, and then discovered that with acrylic one could imbed paper. It was really experimentation and discovery of what these amazing materials could do…”
2. What is the most satisfying aspect of your art for you personally?
The
element of surprise is what gets Forbes excited! “When something comes
together almost unexpectedly and I wonder how I did that — it’s always a search
for the right combination of elements, colors, textures, feelings.”
When they all come together she experiences great satisfaction. “It’s
like turning over pieces to see what fits. Sometimes I have to turn over a lot
of pieces to get the right combination — sometimes wondering whether to
continue. Seems like it is always worth continuing the work to a happy
conclusion.”
3. Why do you enjoy commissions to create specific pieces
for interiors/patrons?
Forbes
expresses genuine gratitude for her patrons. “I feel honored and
appreciated when someone likes and appreciates my work and invites me to do
something special for their home or office space.”
4. What pleases/satisfies you about this custom commission process?
The
process of working together with her
patrons is positive creative challenge. “I enjoy the collaborative aspect
and going through the process with a client or designer and receiving their
feedback as the work progresses.”
The
satisfaction for a designer in partnering with an artist is designing and realizing
a vision to complete a space. Bringing visions to reality. I often say that my team provides tremendous
support in making my dreams come true. From artists and craftspeople to seamstresses
and all manner of contractors, it is truly a team effort to achieve great
results!
Colors for fashion, interiors or a composing a bouquet are like the many ingredients, spices and herbs selected for great food. Creating dishes with fine flavors and visual appeal, by selecting the right combination, is good culinary design. So we see the spices and ingredients of design everywhere!
Assembling the colors, textures and shapes in a bouquet…
The art is in gathering the right combinations, textures, colors, flavors,…ok – maybe edible bouquets…Well, we’re not tasting the interiors – but some are scrumptious! Ooh – good enough to eat! And the fashion – yes, we’ve seen edible fabrics…generally not attempted in draperies – but who knows? The sky is the limit in design!!!
A few years ago, Kingston University Fashion Student, Emily Crane began pioneering a new strain of edible couture created from gelatin and seaweed! Brilliant and beautiful!!
Inasmuch as edible couture and creating fabrics from edible materials is fascinating, I digress…the actual point of my story is to recognize the common denominators between gathering materials for all forms of art – the assemblages result in the creative finished products. In this instance, interiors and their color schemes which bear likenesses to beautiful foods!
Color is the most apparent ingredient of most artistic design endeavors. It is the most obvious and first to catch your eye. Assembling an interior is usually grounded by a desired color. The foundation of a room begins with deciding a direction with color. This might seem to be contrary to the concept that form follows function – but I believe that the designing for the two are often concurrent events. The vision occurs while the function is simultaneously examined. Most people visualize in color.
I often write about color. It is an ongoing fascination to discover who prefers what color(s) and why. It offers the beginning of the visualization of a concept. As the framework is discussed – such as programming a kitchen. Inevitably, in the early stages, colors and materials are discussed. They might change. They might not end up as first imagined, but color aids in the visualization and process of design.
Look around your world and consider color. Why did you choose your interior colors? When selecting a color for the surfaces, fabrics and finish materials what would you do differently and why. Taking care not to merely react to trends, what colors will bring you joy? Trends often tempt. They are enticing and new, but they move along…It takes thorough examination to determine if a trend is truly applicable or merely a passing temptation. The validation of design is the approval of the occupants or function for whom/which it serves. Not just the feature of a new trend.
So have a little fun seeing these interiors
paired with edible color schemes as dishes are correlated to interior schemes.
The spices and ingredients selected to create the flavor bursts might be hot green jalapenos, serranos, tart limes, dried red chiles balanced by the soft and warm yellow of corn tortillas.
What interior might look like a spicy platter of festivity?
Perhaps bold wall colors sprinkled with myriad decorative accessories and
functional art.

Imagine creating a creamy white-sauce mushroom pasta with
velvety texture and soft finish. The ingredients you would reach for would be
the cream, pasta, white pepper and perhaps a touch a sherry. Sautéing the
mushrooms in butter for a luscious golden brown.

Some retailers put Christmas merchandise out with Halloween and squeeze Thanksgiving autumnal themes in between. But for sure, by Black Friday its all about Christmas merchandising and SHOPPING! The season is in full swing! After salivating over the finely “curated” collections at Sundance, peeking through the dazzling embroidery at Johnny Was, had a taste of Margaritaville at Tommy Bahama’s and elbowed through the throngs at Anthropolgie…among the myriad stores I visited – well, raced through – this weekend, Crate and Barrel is the one where I focused my camera and paused to ponder as they are one of the most prominent trend setters in world of home decor.
Upon arrival, front and center in the very first display, I was particularly drawn to this embroidered pillow announcing South for the Winter!
It caught my eye as it stated my very thoughts on the subject – although I prefer to stick around for a wintry Christmas and then head south as January sets in…it nevertheless spoke to me. But the combined selection of plaid fabric tree skirt and the cotton pillow had me puzzled. I picture the pillow being in that southerly destination expressing the sentiment but paired with the plaid, like a fish out of water. Plaid in a warm winter getaway didn’t seem to fit. Perhaps it is a pillow that you leave in your chilly, empty, abandoned house with your woolen plaid blankets and afghans as you snow-bird it south? In which case the woolly plaid works, albeit nobody is there to get the drift – snow drift! Or a third scenario that I imagined is when you dream of going south, but are stuck in the northern climes and the pillow states your thoughts in a “wouldn’t it be nice” wishful thinking scenario??!! Three stories for this little pillow…which do you think is the best story?
There on the Christmas display is an intriguing statement of home decor. There it sits, this smart little pillow, all dressed up with the coordinating holiday plaid and exclaiming a statement that might have many connotations…
It’s nice to establish traditions for Christmas and other major holidays throughout the year. Yet like home decor in general, some people are more sentimental than others. While some treasure each year’s addition to a collection or contribution to the spirit of the season, others trade the look with each new trend.
This year an all gold tree…next year it might be jewel tones of amethyst purple, aquamarine teal and ruby accents…and of course the ever popular white on white on white!
Like personal interior design, some switch it out often, with changing fashions, while others nestle in and call it home for the duration. The compromise here is that there might be a family room tree that displays all the traditional ornaments while a more focal tree in an entry or living room makes the trending design statement.
As interior designers we wouldn’t be very busy if everyone nestled in without change for decades, however, even in this staid scenario there is the need for sprucing up the tired, updating certain elements, replacing damaged or broken items…Therefore, reupholstering, replacing of worn flooring, introducing fresh paint colors, improving lighting, opening spaces, face-lifting kitchens and bathrooms…there are many things that we as designers can do to update while not changing the essence of the place called home. Just in time for the holidays and the refresh-during-winter design blitz!!
Back to Crate and Barrel’s merchandising…
The bling that sparkles in the long dark nights of winter is a recurring and uplifting theme.
Red and green are inescapable for traditional Christmas color schemes.
Holly leaves and berries, evergreen needles, brilliant red bows and ribbony garlands.
Having previously stated my love of the traditional blue and white color schemes in so many applications and blogs I have written, Hanukah’s blue and white colors are perfect to crisply punctuate the doldrums of defoliated trees and dormant, bare bones deciduous landscapes of winter. The cool yet refreshing theme is a perfect winter color scheme.
With their modern/retro style melding with a bit of industrial, Crate and Barrel’s stylized wing chairs with their updated lines sport a fresh take on a paisley motif cotton print.
Naughty or nice, reindeer, fir trees, twinkling lights, scented candles, silver and gold, movies and music all stir the senses rejoicing in a healthy economy of vibrant shops, eager shoppers, anxious bargain-hunters, BOGOs and door busters, full of fresh new ideas, products, design trends, toys, gadgets and nearly anything you can imagine!
So get out there and strengthen the fiber of your community, support local artists and fabricators when you can, shop where your neighbors work and where your local entrepreneurs invest their dollars and dreams. Try not to overdose on all the glitz and blitzen of the merchandizing madness!!
I was surfing for fodder about the new color trends to kick-off this first mindful missive for the New Year and the color trends were all over the place – no consistency at all. From Ben Moore selecting Caliente AF290,
“Caliente is the signature color of a modern architectural masterpiece; a lush carpet rolled out for a grand arrival; the assured backdrop for a book-lined library; a powerful first impression on a glossy front door. The eye can’t help but follow its bold strokes. Harness the vitality.”

to Sherwin Williams in a totally opposite direction proclaiming Oceanside SW 6496 their color of the year.
“A collision of rich blue with jewel-toned green, a color that is both accessible and elusive… A complex, deep color that offers a sense of the familiar with a hint of the unknown, Oceanside, bridges together a harmonious balance of blues and greens that can be found in what’s old and new.”
What? Are we straddling now? Do we have one foot in one color trend while the other stretches across the color wheel and causes us to nearly do the splits trying desperately to hang on?
The walls of my east gallery space were a spicy version of Caliente for nearly 20 years! Bold at the time and unheard-of for gallery walls – it was not to be changed for nearly 2 decades!!!
Whew – that was a run. I even named the retail space “Caliente.” And the color-band between the crown and picture molding at the back was a version of Oceanside – a lighter value of the blue-green hue.
The Grand Re-Opening July 2016 presented a dramatic transformation to a pale aqua resulting in a diametrically opposed feeling – a cleansing from what was crowded and hot to spare and cool.
But I digress…
Annoyed by the seeming authority, but weak contrasting rationale that I encountered with the wide range of picks and opinions, I left the paint companies and clicked over to the Pantone site. There I encountered their authoritative, ethereal color forecast of the year – Ultra Violet!!!!!
Yikes – they were coming at me from every conceivable direction!!! How on earth is any eager apartment dwelling or home-owning individual supposed to know how to go forward in sprucing up their space without fear?
Then I came upon a piece by Mehgan Nesmith Ugh, What’s With These Generational Color “Trends”? From observing the broad reaching trend surrounding millennial pink to snippets from other sources, I scanned the paragraphs amused, but still not satisfied. Until I arrived at paragraph 6 and there it was – the true fact that keeps the world moving forward – for better or worse – TRENDS DIE.
Yes they do and for good reason. I’ve said it before, take care in making costly selections that will stay with you past their prime. Trends are there for a reason. Designers dabble in creativity every day of the year to come up with things to tantalize, inspire, evoke, and entertain – and most importantly, SELL. Some of these trends stick. Then they are no longer trends, they transition and become classics. But to transcend the fleeting status of trend, “it” must have something very solid about its being.
And when it comes to interior design, with all the style trends for furniture, fabrics, architectural elements, finishes and decorative accessories – colors race through history like no other design element has or will. Colors rule and when they are good, they are very very good, but when they are bad, they are horrid!!!!! Thank you Mr. Longfellow!!
Take the massively graceful modern art piece suspended from the ceiling of the East Wing of the National Art Gallery in Washington, D.C. – classic – both in form and color. Red and black. Strong and simple. Bold and brilliant. Imagine if it were this year’s Pantone pick Ultra Violet Aghhhh!!!!!!!
Actually, methinks I protest too much. The shade of purple picked, by Pantone, is heavy on the blue rather than the red. The blue cast gives it a calm. Not whacky like Barney screaming purple – but, rather a royal shade. Nonetheless, it is better served as an accent – don’t buy wallpaper in it. Go ahead and paint the walls and have your fun – but know that you can change it without peeling off hundreds, if not thousands of dollars of wall-covering or re-upholstering your sofa like Meghan was tempted to do!!
It’s a color that stands alone – plays better by itself than with friends – like the child’s report card where the box that says “plays well with others” is not checked. In my estimation, it will read well with clean, crisp white. However, like Ms. Nesmith aptly says in her piece “if you are still curious about that Gen Z yellow, buy a vase!”
That’s how we play with colors and create a bit of collision, unexpected off-key harmony, intrigue and suspense. But it is not for the faint of heart and the chance of tiring of it is paramount. Trends die and colors are tricky.

This last week I was inspired by a rainbow that appeared over our great Sandia Mountain and within 3 minutes I nearly tripped over a bed of flowers presenting the same rainbow of colors. With this pairing of color coincidence, I felt compelled to write this week’s blog about color.
Color can be difficult. It is so critical to effective design decisions whether graphic design, fashion design, interior design or architecture. It might be used for a logo to brand a business , a room scheme or the exterior of a monumental building…how do you begin to select a color or a color scheme?
Well first you have to consider your client. What are their needs and desires? Once narrowed, the search for the perfect colors to convey their project’s personality begins.
Computers aid designers in finding fine nuances between colors. Exploring the range of values in a hue – the range of light to dark of a specific color and the adjacent colors that meld from one to the next has become easier.
It all comes down to the color wheel. It’s a circle illustrating the colors of the spectrum. The relationship of these colors are the building blocks of all the colors. Sir Isaac Newton – the same of the apple and gravity fame – devised this understanding of the rainbow of colors back in the 1600s using a prism to identify the components.
As children we are taught about the rainbow of colors comprising ROY G BIV – the easy to remember name that represents the colors RED ORANGE YELLLOW GREEN BLUE INDIGO VIOLET
Decisions regarding the selection of colors and the resulting schemes are identified by the following relationships:
Complimentary – two opposite colors on the color wheel
Monochromatic – three different values of the same color
Analogous – three adjacent colors on the color wheel
Split Complements – one color and the two adjacent tertiary colors of its complement
Triadic – three evenly spaced colors on the color wheel
Tetradic – two complimentary pairs of colors

This last week, over the course of 2 days, I encountered several examples of these colors all around me. From the rainbow to the flowers and myriad balloons. It didn’t hurt that it was during the International Balloon Fiesta http://www.balloonfiesta.com/ which is one of the most colorful events in the world.
Unless we have a limitless budget affording custom design materials, it is best to begin with the materials that offer the fewest colors. I have mentioned this in the past, there are more paint colors than there are carpet colors, fabric colors, or solid surface materials. Therefore, selecting your color scheme based upon the selection of a material with fewer color options is the best start…you build from there…paint being the easiest component to finish the scheme.
Color affects mood, perceived temperature, individual’s reaction to seasonal cues, and all manner of context. Pastels in springtime and warm tones in the fall – color makes powerful suggestions and should be used as a tool with that power in mind. The power of suggestion. What are you suggesting? What are you trying to convey?
With your best intentions, colors will change with light sources, time of day, adjacent colors and people’s own perceptions. It is not a perfect science when you consider all those variables. Take caution to select colors based upon the conditions that will occur in the final location/presentation. Without fear, pick your color schemes and beware, but don’t be afraid!
While at the stop light, I found myself behind this gorgeous fire truck and by the time I thought I should take it’s photo, it was pulling away and I was making a U-turn! So I quickly grabbed the phone, fumbled for the camera icon, and snapped this shot over the dash through the windshield as it powered up the street.
I have zoomed in on this spotlessly, shiny, magnificent machine for the effect of today’s story subject. This wonderful, patriotic, service – truck struck me not only because it was colorful and sparkling, but much of the high contrast and bling came from the diamond tread wrapping the handsome body.
Earlier in the week a client casually mentioned how cool it would be to use some of this material as an interior design element! Little did he know that his simple off-the-cuff comment inspired me to investigate and plan to do just that! I was minutes from presenting to this very client when this photo op occurred. Serendipitous perhaps?
What sparks the imagination? How do things evolve? What fun it is, as a part of the Creative Process, to explore the possibilities of unexpected materials used in new ways. In this case, the material is perfect to promote the theme of the brand – a successfully growing business related to cars and the repair and restoration thereof.
I won’t reveal the business just yet – it will be a dramatic unveiling soon-to-come. Suffice it to say, I am enjoying the process, with a great team, of expressing and furthering their well-established brand, in the development of the interior and exterior design.
Back to the diamond tread. You’ve seen this used on fire trucks, tool boxes, tailgates, flooring, trap doors…and much more. It comes in glossy aluminum as shown here with its brilliant, bright, bling – also in stainless steel (a bit more expensive), and a dark carbon version. It comes in large sheets – a couple of different sizes and thicknesses.
I have also discovered here, while on the search for materials for this project, a dark iridescent porcelain tile with a bas relief pattern simulating this amazing tread. This material like other faux finishes has it’s practical purposes – but like porcelain wood or porcelain stone – it is NOT the real deal. I have elected not to present this, for use on this project.
So stay tuned to the exciting insertion of this sheet metal in our new interior design. Just enough – not too much – right where it will be effective – and make the best statement.
The takeaway is that the excitement of introducing different materials effectively – not gratuitously – but with a purpose – is part of the fun of design. The daily inspiration that comes from new projects and people, ideas and opportunities!!!
And in light of our holiday weekend – a perfect time to feature the shiny red truck that inspires and represents the outstanding individuals in the service and rescue fields – Happy Labor Day!
This week is a bit spontaneous as it has been a busy one. Lots in the mill so upcoming blogs will have some good fodder. But our anniversary punctuated the center of this last week, on Wednesday night, and I couldn’t resist sharing this delicious coincidence. These splendid short ribs drizzled with a roasted beet root reduction made a sensational presentation. The fresh greens and artful placement of whipped potato dollops with a handsome chunk of juicy, perfection – tender boneless beef atop – all laced with the fabulous fuchsia tumble of tender baby beets and their sassy sauce was an aromatic and visual treat for the senses.
I cut away at the magnificent morsels scraping the gooey beet paint as I went along…
Good ’til the last drop, I hated to be finished. As I ran the edge of my fork over the hot pink cochineal-like residue of all that was left of my delectable dish, the waiter came by to clear and exclaimed- “a heart!” And so it was. An artfully noteworthy finale, to a wonderful evening. Happy Anniversary!
You know…we designers design for our clients and ourselves around themes, we design around events, we design around seasons and of course we design around the trends…it all keeps the commerce of products and materials in motion. And at this time of year, we see focus on wine clubs, pajama grams, stuffed teddy bears in enormous sizes, hearts, hearts, hearts…and roses natural red or gilded, it’s Valentine’s Day!!!
But it’s fair to note that all seasons have valid design consideration. Setting the scene, enhancing the moment – either for you, your family or a romantic encounter, the holidays and especially this one, evoke a desire to create a scene that conveys love and romance.
To that end , my blog is brief. Enjoy that which brings you joy. Revel in the happiness that presents itself. Create beauty where you can. And as we are want to say….art and good design can almost always bring a better scene to anyone’s place on this precious planet.
So be it a candy heart with a common message of joy, a product acquired to create a scene, a piece of jewelry to promise, a token to send love, a greeting of friendship, a message to offer support, it is all about connecting.
I decided to paint a bowl for my sweetheart. Yes, I had passed this guy’s booth, encouraged others to partake, had appreciated his talent, but never ventured forth. This year, I enjoyed sitting alongside Victor in the shade, with the waves lapping the beach, and soft music wafting through the air…allowing a moment of focus on an artistic expression, a blank canvas (my bowl) to say Happy Valentine’s Day to MY Valentine.
