Neighborhood covenants, zoning, physical practicality, budgetary constraints…all enter into whether it is realistic or desirable to save vegetation when clearing land for development. Carving around existing growth can be a tedious and costly addition to a project. But there are times when it is a design asset – an imperative even – to the over-all setting and effect of the scene.
Saving trees when designing a built environment is a challenge
that often pays off.
Raping acres of woods for barren subdivisions and adding back newly planted saplings the caliper of a quarter is unfortunate and takes years to satisfy. FHA requirements were the tell-tale token of bringing green back after a bulldozer’s brutal removal of all plant-life on a property. That lanky stick standing in the center of a dirt patch, that might get sod or seed…or rock, was a pitiful attempt to give back to the environment. However, in addition to broad-sweeping examples, individual decisions to saver rather than remove can prove valuable.
Years ago, when planning a patio expansion and exterior kitchen, friends brought the plans to me for a quick check before committing to the design from the design/build contractors that they had engaged. The new patio plan meandered along nearly the entire back facade of the house. With all the exciting kitchen layout and bar, seating areas and dining space, I instantly focused on the fact that their beautiful red-bud tree was gone – not in evidence on the pans! I exclaimed about it and was told that they were told it had to go. That was about 10 years ago – or more, yet it still stands today having modified the design to include a tree-well in the patio and opening in the proposed high-ceiling patio cover. The stunning multi-truck tree thrives, in the ground as it had for decades, and climbs skyward through the opening spreading widely toward the second story of the home. A wonderful, living, sculptural element, in the space. Good save!
Warmer climates invite the indoor/outdoor melding of living spaces. We all try to achieve them despite bitter cold transitions and near, if not complete shut-downs “off-season.” But in the tropics, outdoor living spaces become remarkable dimensions to expand living.
This past week, that situation came to mind as I enjoyed several examples of incorporating nature into the design scheme. Yes, landscape design is just that. Landscape architects do just that. They design exterior spaces with organic material. But what I was feeling recently was two complimentary things – one that designing in and around existing growth is so satisfying and in some cases, the living plant material becomes the architecture – not merely compliments it.
This past couple of weeks, we have see the results of 2 years of preparation and construction which transformed of a piece of partially vacant land into a seaside resort. Several key palms and a couple other key trees were saved and hundreds more were brought to the site to complete the design. The towering new trees showed signs of shock with their dried frond tips – but will surely survive.
When landscaping becomes architecture you know you have crossed an exciting line. What I mean by that is to have the growth become walls – to have the vegetation read as though structural framework.
A tree house is another example. The tree is the structure – the framework to begin the additional elements that create a suspended room.
By observing examples in your world, you will see, when designing around and in concert with the natural landscaping, the effects can be dramatic and of great value to the scene. On your next project, consider the possibilities of saving rather than removing – incorporating and celebrating nature’s design elements!
If the Basilica in my last blog didn’t get your juices
flowing about incredible public art spaces, the Library of Congress was our
next stop. Yes, it houses nearly everything having to do with writing,
recording, documenting…but the building itself is amazing! It in itself is a
wealth of artistic detailing. The interior has more gold leaf – not gold paint
– but hammered metal gold leaf – than any other building in our Nation’s
Capital. Inside and out, the craftsmanship of the stone carvings and
architectural embellishments is magnificent. This inestimable landmark is so
much more than the sober name suggests.
We parked in the garage of Union Station and walked the few
blocks past the Supreme Court and the Capitol Building to our destination of
the Library of Congress. The brilliant blue skies behind the bright white
edifices belied what some regarded as the oppressive heat. I however am a heat
freak – it’s summer – bring it on!
Symbolism is executed with every inch of the design details
both inside and out of the imposing Library of Congress. Ascending the exterior
stairs sets the stage for arriving at a monument of immeasurable wealth of
human dissertation and history. Here I can only touch on the tip of the
iceberg…
From an inauspicious beginning of modest expectations to
greater expanses with devastating fiery catastrophes in between, the Library of
Congress has an amazing story. Thomas Jefferson played a significant role in
re-building the foundation of what we now have today.
While waiting for the tour to begin in the magnificent
Thomas Jefferson building, we were directed to two remarkably entertaining exhibits
on the lower level – a Gershwin gathering and a Hope homage.
The George and Ira Gershwin Room is a tribute to the two
brothers and their contribution to American music. This nostalgic and very
familiar subject matter makes you hum and tap your toes. The exhibit presents
George’s piano and custom-designed writing desk, Ira’s table and typewriter,
self portraits and myriad documents that trace their lives and amazing careers.
The Hope for America Exhibit focuses on the varied careers
of Bob Hope along with other recognizable entertainers. The exhibit offers the
satirical humor – crossing party lines – both socially and politically for
which Hope was so appreciated, admired and beloved. Hope received the U.S.
Congressional Medal of Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his
commitment, in his nearly 50 year service, entertaining the men and women of
the armed forces abroad.
As the actual tour began, we were introduced with a short
film as an overview of what was to come. We were then guided up a staircase and
gathered in what was a most astonishingly beautiful, expansive space full of
piercing, daylight, sunbeams glancing off incredibly detailed architectural
stone carving and sculpture. Vast murals, vaults and arches in the 360 degrees
of beauty from floor to voluminous ceiling was staggering.
” Founded in 1800, the Library of Congress is the
nation’s oldest federal cultural institution. The Library seeks to spark the
imagination and creativity and to further human understanding and wisdom by
providing access to knowledge through its magnificent collections, programs and
exhibitions.” Thomas Jefferson stepped-in to save the Library of Congress
after a few inauspicious starts. Not
enough time devoted here to a history lesson – learn more at https://www.loc.gov/ – but this grand space into which we entered is
the Thomas Jefferson Building.
The focus of this blog is to share a bit of the art and
decorative embellishments of this stunning architectural environment –
beginning with the Commemorative Arch by Olin L. Warner (1844-1896) featuring a
young man to the left and a bearded elder man on the right signifying that the
process of learning never ceases…
Grand staircases on opposing sides of the space are adorned
with carvings of “putti” – Italian for little boys – as they are
pictured representing various occupations from gardeners to astronomers – the depiction
of each vocation is fascinating with what it means to have that respective
knowledge to pursue one’s career path.
Beneath the string of putti are representations of the 4
corners of the globe depicting figures of each, Asia paired with Europe and
American paired with Africa.
Minerva, the Roman Goddess of Learning and Wisdom is aptly
featured in a series of statues and images.
Most fascinating to me, up in an adjacent domed ceiling area
was the “Evolution of the Written Word,” a series of lunettes by John
White Alexander (1856-11915). Having previously written about the importance of
handwriting for a million reasons that go beyond, but are directly connected
to, this depicted evolution, I found this to be simple, yet profound. It is a beautifully
rendered and fascinatingly distilled artistic expression of a very significant
timeline. Beginning with The Cairn – we see them stacked stones on beaches for
fun and on paths in the wilderness as markers, but here Alexander renders
primitive man communicating by stacking stones to possibly mark the dead, a
passage or a place of significance.
As the history progresses, Oral Tradition becomes the means
of communication – but only/obviously in personal contact. Words are created.
Then Egyptian Hieroglyphics enter the scene with images representing words
depicted on surfaces.
Picture Writing on animal skin – and ultimately more refined
to vellum – becomes a more mobile means of communication.
Theologians recording ancient stories of biblical history
brought monks to the art of the written word in compilations of the Bible as
the first manuscripts/books became recorded.
And then an exponential leap in communication came with the invention of John Gutenberg ca. 1400-1468 of the Printing Press! Asia had its versions of printing machines even before Gutenberg, but inspired by seeing grapes at harvests being “pressed,” he put that concept into the process of placing individual letters in place and pressing them onto paper. Western Europe then had a movable metal type process that increased productivity of printed material – printing the first ……in Western Europe. The tour guide sadly explained to us that Gutenberg died a pauper as his investors, not patient with economic fluctuations, excused him from his rightful place in the business and left him to live out his life only to receive proper recognition posthumously.
It is the first complete book
extant in the West and is also the earliest to be printed from movable type. This
rare version is printed on vellum.
Unfortunately, at this point in the tour, we had to excuse
ourselves with a quick wave and thanks to our guide as we were departing later
that afternoon. Before leaving the building though, we dashed upstairs to
discover the main Reading Room – entering from a way upper tier, we had a
bird’s-eye view of this grand space. The scale was daunting and the spectacular
architectural detail was breath-taking. The WOW-factor was palpable!
Eight giant marble columns each support 10-foot-high
allegorical female figures in plaster representing characteristic features of
civilized life and thought: Religion, Commerce, History, Art, Philosophy,
Poetry, Law and Science.
The 16 bronze statues upon the balustrades of the
galleries are a tribute to men whose lives symbolized the thought and activity
represented by the plaster statues.
And with that – we only had enough experience and education about this incredible resource and monument of artistic beauty to whet our appetite for more and surely lure us there again for more information about all that comprises this amazing public gift and resource.
There are so many wonderful things to see and do – get out there and see it!!!
This week, upon arrival at the Denver airport, as I navigate this architecturally dramatic facility, I’m funneled with the masses making our way, from the gate area, to the trains, to the terminal. When suddenly, gracefully overhead as we ascend the escalator, large versions of paper airplanes hover above. Probably steel, but with the familiar fold and form of the simple paper origami originals, they were a whimsical attention divergence.
When I arrived at the top of the escalator, I realized that they were also above the escalator across the way so I walked over there (to the surprise of the masses with whom I had been funneling along). A couple in the crowd even called out “hey” or “ma’am” …I turned to see some were concerned that I had lost my way and expressed concern that I follow the pack. I waved to these helpful strangers indicating with my phone in hand that I was stopping to take a photo of these wonderful suspended planes.
This ignited a curiosity that led me to investigate a bit more. I have since learned that they are part of the Denver International Airport’s Arts & Venues Denver: Public Art Program 1994. There are 140 of these suspended would-be-paper (steel alloy) planes and they are the work of artist Patty Ortiz titled Experimental Aviation. A well-recognized artist and curator of contemporary art with decades of art management experience she “believes that art intrinsically is a social object and when placed as an action in relationship with the viewer ad participant that art carries a profound interconnectedness within real experience.” And there I was experiencing the simple loveliness and joy that these airplane sculptures conveyed, in context with the often monotonous air travel experience.

Paper airplanes are timeless tools of communication set flying from one person to another often with a secret note inside. Unfold and discover the message. Like passenger pigeons of days gone by…but unlike their obsolete and ultimately extinct message-delivering cousins, paper airplanes are timeless.
Never taking up the art, it has fascinated me forever. Origami seems to be originated from the Japanese word for folding – ori – and paper – kami = Orikami. Japanese art is so fine in all of its forms. And back to the paper airplanes, San Francisco hosted a competition Origami-Palooza complete with education and presentation of many facets of origami work including the Paper Airplane Challenge. My happy observation of this past week and my advice with it – grab a piece of paper and try your hand at folding and flying a paper airplane!!!!!
This week began with a juicy fabric presentation. I say juicy because it got my design juices working and I was inspired to take photos and imagine the opportunities to insert these wonderful colors, patterns and textures into upcoming projects.
Take the chicken and the egg scenario. Do YOU often find that exciting design elements invite thoughts of projects for which to use them?
A fun exercise is to take your camera and search for patterns to photo…patterns are everywhere from cast shadows to fabrics, signs and graphics to fallen leaves.
Seeing these exciting new fabrics – you had no intention of changing all your throw pillows, but these stimulating samples might make you consider changing your entire collection!
The opportunity to offer unique fabrics for clients who would otherwise never be exposed to the samples – not know of the possibilities – is exciting. Being able to make this introduction is a treat.
This first batch was of clean, sophisticated, woven, geometrics in blacks, whites and charcoal tones.
Whimsical patterns and textures, with splashes of color, offer more possibilities.
Now see these rich woven patterns and colors in this next series. An explosion of color and pattern with a decidedly native direction – prime for New Mexico and design projects looking to evoke the elements of the southwest and other opportunities inspired by indigenous art.
With all this freshly implanted in my ever-swirling brain of design fragments waiting to be assembled, I traveled north this weekend for an enchanting New Mexico wedding that further fed the theme of indigenous art, pattern and design.
The lobby of Buffalo Thunder was riddled with magnificent pueblo pottery. The designs were wonderfully intricate and I saw them as stand-alone elements that could easily be fabric motifs. Here on pottery – but so fascinating to consider as possible inspirations for fabric patterns and designs.

Suggestive of a court jester, this expressive piece tells a figure story. The bold patterns make a powerfully beautiful statement. Who loves bold stripes? Do you wear them? Do you upholster with them?

Cut-outs on lobby lounge chairs, with geometric upholstery, atop bold zig-zags of the area rug proves combining patterns creates a fine line between exciting juxtapositions and pairings – and risking possible disturbing disruption of order. Comedian Steven Wright uses dry wacky wit delivering hysterically funny observations to convey a sense of the obvious with a twist. I’m paraphrasing one I remember from years ago… “You know that feeling that you get when you lean way back in a chair…way back on the back legs…back so far that you are just about to fall…I feel like that all the time.” That’s like that feeling with challenging design. It goes just far enough to get your attention…designers get that feeling as they push the theoretical limits of design – all the time!
Ok- this is not perhaps THE most outrageous example of this theory – but a fun, eye-catching combination nonetheless!
Buffalo Thunder resort was the jumping off point to then venture beyond into the thrilling landscape of La Mesita Ranch.
Mixing different colors of brick make this random patterned walkway very pleasing and interesting.
The setting was natural, organic and inspired.

Toodling around Tucson today this Easter eve, we came upon some fun seasonal art!! From antique to modern masterpieces made today, it was quite a diverse array!
An antique Lalique French crystal bowl was an elegant vessel to present these hand-painted pastel wooden eggs. Mixing refined with folk-art is a wonderful contrast in style!
Potter Robin Chlad designs and builds these stunning three-dimensional crosses. Adorned with birds and flowers, no two are alike and the brilliant colors are fabulous!
We hopped past these adorable bunnies! So many colors of fine metal-craft each. What a whimsical collection by artist Jeffie Brewer!! And his subject matter is well beyond bunnies!!!!
Explosions of spring cactus are in bloom from nature’s statement in these vivid coral barrel cacti we encountered in a xeric garden,
to the artist Lucky Coleman’s fanciful interpretations using brilliant combinations of glazes on dazzling sculptures of clay! The beauty of nature to the fantasy of an artist’s creativity, we witnessed magnificent blooms! A time of rebirth and new life – spring is in the air!
The world is becoming so fast. Decisions are “snap.” Instant gratification abounds. And as we get caught-up in it all, more and more…there is a pendulum swinging. People are taking notice and longing for a reprieve. There is a clinging to values that if not grasped, might be lost.
Slow Food, farm-to-table proximity, support local, shop small…sound familiar? And does it appeal? Why do you think? As Amazon gobbles-up Whole Foods and everyone finds expeditious shopping satisfaction in cyber-space at the click of a finger – why?
Last night, as the sun set and the lights penetrated the darkness with their warm glow, I found myself strolling around, taking photos and breathing in the moist night air. Seaside, tucked in a quiet corner of a significant marina in Nuevo Vallarta, I recognized the magic. I was experiencing such magic.
It’s actually all around us, but it often takes a change of venue to realize it. In your world there is magic all around, but you have to take notice!
As I strolled, I came upon the painting recently completed by a dear friend. As I learned of the intent and while studying this painting of “The Violinist”, the sensitivity of the artist is revealed. And later confirmed by him. Her tentative stance and demeanor begs the question he set the stage to ask: “Might this be her debut?”

I then spoke to the sister-in-law of the artist, (chef/owner of the acclaimed Estudio-Cafe) and she reminded me about Joshua Bell. Although I had forgotten his name, his enlightening story was quickly remembered. Have you heard of him? He’s the world-famous violinist who participated in a little experiment prompted by The Washington Post a few years ago. The idea was to have him play a $3 million dollar 1733 Stradivarius violin incognito, in the Washington METRO, to see if anyone noticed. Disguised as a street musician, with a baseball cap, he played for 45 minutes and collected a mere $32.00!! This is a man who, two days before, played to a sellout crowd of pricey ticket-holders in a Boston theater. A world-class musician, with a priceless instrument, performing classical music of all of mankind and barely anyone notices!

Coincidentally, I came upon another violinist-themed art piece last evening as I meandered through the patio among the quite varied artwork. Here a graceful bronze of a lithe, nude, mermaid projects imaginary sound wafting from her poised violin through the warm evening breeze. I was enchanted. And my imagination was running wild!

Passersby seemed not to recognize the art beside them. As they walked slowly passing by the patio, unhurried, but caught-up in conversation, hopefully enjoying the incredible setting in which they found themselves. Yet they were oblivious to the outstanding collection of art displayed quietly, unpretentiously on the patio.

Back to powers of observation and taking time to absorb all the beauty and experiences around you…Joshua Bell admits, in retrospect, that it was terribly noisy and very fast-paced down in the METRO as better than 1,000 people rushed to their appointments. But regardless, it illuminates the concern that if we don’t pause to listen as we pass by the world’s most beautiful music, what other amazing things in this life might we be missing?
My husband continuously observes that I am NOT very observant. I know that this is true and I think it is because he and I observe differently. He takes in a wide swath of his surroundings – all sensory perceptions – 360. While I zero in on things and can be oblivious to something right in front of me, in favor of something nearby that has caught my eye. I would not make a very good Columbo as he often points out! But I do enjoy the details as I encounter them!
From an interior design standpoint, I take in entire scenes and their context all the time. I “practice” this – I am practicing interior design. This is not spontaneity, it is the art of the study and evaluation of a scene. The challenging work of problem-solving. Until or unless something catches my eye that interrupts the study in favor of the unexpected!!!!
STOP and smell (or paint) the roses!!!!!

Here I was walking along, on this sun-washed Sunday morning, when I came upon what appeared to be giant frog’s eggs in the middle of a field – like ET had laid enormous translucent eggs on earth – I looked up, I looked around and there they sat – tumbled on the grass…the scene was surreal and beautiful in the early morning’s light.
Upon closer inspection, guys were hauling many more of them from a remote truck, onto the field.
I started taking photos and was approached by a man who asked if I had ever seen them before. No, I certainly had not. And inasmuch as this is NOT intended to be an endorsement or advertisement – the bold name, on the side of each, stated KNOCKERBALL!
I was so excited to come upon this other-worldly landscape that I began to fantasize about the many effects of good design. I shot inside the transparent globes, along the edges, down the rows and with great mountain backdrops.
The shape, color and structural detail was fascinating and fun! The taught cords inside created another layer of interest.
The kind man who was coordinating this event explained that they set-up soccer-like goals and wear these globes crashing and smashing, running and rolling across the field – unfortunately, I had to leave before the action began. It must be a blast!
I have since learned that “bubble ball” and “bubble soccer” are other names for this new fangled game and related equipment. So, in direct contrast to discovering art in unexpected places such as a simple series of brush strokes painted on a course concrete curb, (last week’s pattisays blog) this week, as fall leaves fill the air and pumpkins pop up on every surface, my observations are about discovering art occur in an actual art gallery, specifically the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.. Imagine that! The city has been abuzz for months in anticipation of the recent unveiling of the updated East Building.
It was in 1978, the year I left my home town of Washington that I.M. Pei’s exciting new modern edifice was presented to an anxious art-loving public. So very different from the West Building and all others in the historic vicinity, some people were astonished but most were thrilled. This sleek angular sculpture of a building was a statement in and around which to display the growing modern and contemporary collection. An art-piece of its own accord. Yes, the building was at once regarded as its own work of art. We eagerly raced to touch the famous wedge of geometry that came to such an acute angle that it begged to be touched.
Nearly 40 years later that same fine edge is silently showing its age missing little chunks of compound and lovingly discolored with all the hands from around the world that have touched and smiled at the towering stone form in contrast to the rotund, ornamented and domed Capital in the background. Both majestically iconic, but stylistically so very different.
But wait – this elegant aging beauty has had a three year rejuvenation treatment! New stairways and elevators connect galleries making the flow of exhibits more enjoyable. The tunnel connecting East to West sparkles with light and all the subtle changes result in a seamless passage through and enhanced experience for visitors.
The glassy, crisp, stark, expansive lobby where the enormous Calder mobile is suspended defying its enormity and weight as it gracefully, almost motionlessly, moves silently with the subtle, indiscernible stirring of air is the fulcrum of the building. Exhibit halls tucked away but newly connected are exciting to frequent visitors who know the building so well.
I naturally had to have a little fun and in keeping with the season made a couple of entertaining discoveries. Here Four Square and oil on Canvas by Franz Kline in 1956 is noted by The Art Story/Modern Art Insight “a fine example of his gestural approach to painting. The viewer is led to ponder the canvas, seeing as either a close-up of a linguistic symbol, or perhaps, a set of open windows.”
Really? Linguistic symbol or a set of windows? Well, maybe it’s the season…but I instantly saw a cat – a crazy black cat, an abstraction of James Dean’s “Pete” perhaps, which made me want a mask and to be that crazy cat and prance about for Halloween!
In another piece, Portage, by William Kentridge of South Africa born in my birth year of 1955, a folded accordion-like book with torn black figures of paper affixed to encyclopedia pages resulted in my seeing another black cat! I do think it was of human figures bearing weight, carrying, moving through various poses. Call me Halloweeny – but this one was decidedly a black cat. Don’t YOU think?
It was fabulous, exciting, fun and emotional to see the colorful Matisse cut-outs once again in such close proximity with Matisse’s placement marks and rough cut pieces – crude yet refined – rough yet lovely. Seeing these incredible compositions up close again is breath-taking.
Oh, and might this be another seasonal mask?
From awestruck to silly…to a quiet reverence at coming to the black and white photo of this enormous piece in Hotel Regina in Nice in 1953!! Seeing it in the setting of its day and captured in a photo all those many years ago was one of many moments of reverence.
Once again, pay attention to the little things, be surprised, let yourself be amused and enjoy discovering art wherever you might find it – unexpected and very much expected places!
