Seasonal Shifts in Design – When Do YOU Make the Transitions Between Seasons?

I am often asked, “When should I make seasonal changes and how?” This can come from retailers debating their front window displays to individuals wondering when, to change the wreath on the front door and on into their interior decor, to reflect the seasons.

The answer is a combination of things. It’s personal – probably starting with where you live. And for me, it is more than just decorative accents, it’s food and drink and clothing for sure. Clothing though might have real, practical adjustments for temperature, but fashion design and seasonal changes are part of the fun!

So to kick-off fall, I shifted into my seasonal drinking modification – dark drinks – moving from citrus embellishments to the delightful, succulent, marinated cherry at the bottom of a well crafted Manhattan. The perceived warmth of darker drinks is real for me. I would never select a Manhattan in the summer. But I must admit, a vodka martini with a twist is a 365 fall-back beverage for any festive situation.

Clothing and the opportunity to make design statements that reflect the seasonal shift are also fun to embrace! Along with the Manhattan last Friday night, I transitioned into a felted wool tunic with a local artist’s hand-woven black chenille over-sized scarf. Still sleeveless – as the shift is still a bit of a struggle to let go of summer, it was a decidedly seasonal reality nod!

Truth be known, the wide expanse of floor to ceiling folding glass panel doors were wide open right behind us as we sat at the bar allowing a direct connection with the crowds gathered on the patio beneath the high-hat heaters. Truly a straddling of the seasonal shift – not quite ready to let go of al fresco dining???!!!

Seasonal shifts in weather will be a sure way to respond to a want to change decorative elements. And even being a bit pro-active can be a good thing – but when is too early – too early?

Most of us cringe when we hear Christmas music in October or see the merchandise out that early – combining Halloween costumes and candy corn with Christmas trees and all the ornaments. Awful!!!!!!

Across the country, we have experienced a delay in the autumnal shift this year. Summer kept clinging. Warm weather belied the calendar. But when the weather shifts…and the temperature drops…we want to hunker down and cozy up. Perhaps in addition to the decorative items, you might simmer cinnamon sticks on the stove or light candles with spicy scents. How about a hearty beef stew for dinner?

Here we are in mid-October and summer was here yesterday and gone today with the incoming storms, cool drizzle and cloudy skies.

I just got off the phone with Victoria up and over in Fairfield and she bemoaned the fact that last week she was attending classes in shorts and today she is bundled up in a Patagonia fleece jacket not wanting to leave her bed! The seasons have shifted like a slap in the face!

Color is a key element in expressing the seasons. Between summer and fall, golden yellows bridge the gap. Leaves on our red bud tree change from brilliant lime green of summer to brilliant lemon yellow as fall sets in…lime to lemon – a brilliant color statement!

From late summer sunflowers to early autumn chrysanthemums, the brilliant golden yellow satisfies the transition between seasons.

As fall proceeds, the darker tones of rust and caramels suggest the waning season…crunchy, dried leaves and final wisps of foliage going dormant for the winter.

I’m hanging my Black-eyed Susan wreath today out on the front door! I might even leap to the addition of a funky black cat that I have to welcome Halloween. But it has not been a gradual expression of acknowledging the change in seasons, it has been summer…bam – fall.

DIY – I made this and one for Mom a few years ago – they last. Get a grapevine wreath, select your favorite leaves, fruit and flowers, grab your glue gun and wire clippers – Voila!

What spurred this subject for this week’s blog was seeing my neighbor’s witch’s legs a few days ago sticking out from the elegant planter by her front door. I first thought – what a riot! Then I realized, it’s mid-October and I have yet to accept that!

I am very reluctant to release summer. I’m a warm weather one for sure. I cling to the last vestiges of sunlight as it tracks around out house…less evident, less accessible…shorter days…darker mornings and evenings… NO!!!!!!! I resist, but must succumb. There’s no escaping it. The seasons change and time marches on….The happy fuchsia and pink vinca in our front yard might not make it another day with night temperatures threatening to drop.

Decorative accessories punctuate the landscape of autumnal interior design. From real pumpkins and gourds, squashes and mums, to their artificial counterparts made from many media. Glass and pottery, papier-mâché and straw-like wraps, silk flowers and faux fall leaves, the possibilities are endless.

This year some outstanding hand-built pottery figurines caught my eye. Artist Robyn Chlad of Tucson, Arizona has designed and created a collection of wonderful statuary luminarias that are an extraordinary design decree for this and all seasons! Kachina-like, these art-pieces make a fabulously functional statement!

At first I was attracted to their vertical shape and fine detailing. The characters had personality – rigid in their cylindrical forms, yet very animated of expression and fine features.

Chlad has depicted regional animals with a bit of folkloric whimsy (in the jackalope – half jack rabbit/half horned antelope) to present a collection of irresistible characters to gather at your dining table, or greet you on your entry console, perk-up your powder room, collect on your cocktail table, grace your patio, or animate your kitchen!!! How fun are they?

They each are pierced with designs, to allow the light to glow from inside, that depict the landscape or regional architecture in and around which these creatures roam. Illuminated by electrical lamps, battery bulbs, or candles, they are fantastic!

Functional art – these pottery luminarias are exciting art pieces to add a joyful glow to your shorter days and darker hours….

The raw terracotta clay contributes to their natural beauty and complimentary color with a fall palette. It is a strong statement, yet the surfaces are smoothly burnished and have a soft read. The touches of matte glazes add just enough adornment enhancing the statues with soft earthen color accents.

Entrepreneurs! Getting Started with Design!

Starting out with your first brick and mortar business, the tasks are many. After homing in on your business specifics, selecting a name, designing a logo, deciding colors…you have your license and your business plan, you’ve found a place and then you need to present your business to the world!

A few weeks ago, we began a new project that is just what I have described…an exciting first-timer in the business world, having worked for others is now ready to do her own thing, be her own boss, make her own decisions and assume the risks necessary to take this leap into entrepreneurial adventure.

It’s exciting and scary, daunting at times and fun too. And it should be fun. Finding something that you enjoy, something you believe in and believe that you can do as well as, if not (hopefully) better than, anyone else in your market.

With inventory determined, name and logo designed the last task was to create the space to present her concept. We won’t divulge that today, the project is yet to be presented, but the framework is on what I want to comment.

We began compiling some finish options…paint, upholstery, privacy curtains, carpet and a little brushed aluminum bling!! We want to reinforce her brand with key colors and finishes.

Knowing the terms of the lease agreement – what is the landlord’s responsibility, what is grandfathered-in, what can be changed, any spending allowances amortized into the lease…these are all things that are necessary to determine how to go about designing the interior. It is necessary to establish costs within the over-all start-up budget. Having helpful, knowledgeable, creative people around you with whom to assemble your team is imperative.

We arrived at the site to find a very clean slate. Located in a retail strip center, it was a white box.

We instantly decided the flooring would be a combination of polished concrete and broadloom carpeting, some lights stay and some go, spots will be added, colors will reinforce her brand.

Toward the back, a break-room kitchen area needed demolition. This pocket would become fitting rooms.

There was existing ceramic tile on the floor that also needed to be removed. These were things that our client could attack herself – saving money and getting to know her space.

We learned that the restrooms were grandfathered in and did not require any additional improvements – other than cosmetic.

We learned that we could make changes and additions to the lights and only needed a permit for electrical portion of the work.

Many of these discoveries were of pleasant surprise to our client who had been miss-directed a bit and was in a state of frustration and near defeat. Gathering good information is imperative, in order to save time and money, make good decisions and know your options. Get out there and get busy!!!!!

Living Room Transformation

As an adjunct to last week’s story about the progressive young couple and their dramatic kitchen remodel, I thought I should finish the subject and tell about the adjacent living room transformation and comfortable family room on the lower level.

When the kitchen grew to become the focal point upon entering and the bar counter expanded into the living area, it reduced that space to now become a comfortable sitting room for guests to gather or the family to relax while activities are brewing in the kitchen.

Looking through to the dining room where a built-in storage bench was added along the window wall, offers additional seating. A new fabric-shade chandelier softens the light levels. All lighting in this remodel are on dimmers.

The former white brick wall had gently rubbed edges to suggest a distressed condition exposing the red brick beneath. The fireplace had an unrelated golden oak mantle and surround with insipid tile inset also used to cover the hearth. The tile was a glazed faux marble with a Victorian design accent feature.

By simply painting the oak white to match the rest of the wood trim throughout the home and also painting the brick a soft taupe/grey tone, the look was instantly transformed. But they still had that awful tile…so here’s a design tip: to buy time either while you decide or until you save-up for the next phase, paint the tile away!!! To accommodate a new TV that is to go over the mantle, the wood surround was shortened. Notice the extra piece of wood trim that was removed to lower the mantle.

The hearth was removed and rebuilt (without the cut-off corners) with brick and painted to match the wall. Lucky for them the hardwood floor went beneath the hearth – so when they modified the size, they didn’t have to patch the floor! Tile was removed and replaced with 2×2 mosaic Carrara marble to coordinate with the herringbone mosaic of the same marble in the new kitchen backsplash/wall (see last week’s blog).

A sofa found, for nearly free, was in good shape and reupholstered beautifully in this plush, durable navy solid.

The classic blue and white motif was punctuated with organic yellow.

The newly refinished original hardwood floors – taken from a golden oak finish to a rich espresso/walnut stain…

…with the blue and white wool hook rug creates a handsome contrast. The rug actually “reads” blue and white, but upon closer inspection has warm khaki tones, soft turquoise detailing and is quite complex.

This revitalized cozy ambiance of this new sitting area/living room is perfect for this growing young family!

And for a more expansive gathering space, the lower level family room received a new sectional sofa in a durable charcoal fabric and a low-pile small diamond patterned wall to wall carpeting to conceal what had been cold tile floors and make a comfortable room for all seasons!

Purrrrrrhaps someday they’ll have a cat to climb that crazy rope-wrapped pole!!!!!

Young Family Prioritizes Remodel

We all know that traditional housing floor plans are changing to maximize smaller footprints. The result is a more open layout. This preference, often seen in “loft” design where warehouse space is converted to living spaces – without many walls and with an eye on the interestingly industrial finishes of the existing space. But this same concept applies to new home construction for starters or down-sizing to smaller homes and is definitely applicable in remodels of existing traditionally compartmentalized plans.

Lifestyles too have opened kitchens. Although often to maximize smaller spaces, they are also more open as cooking is more celebrated in the home and related activities are shared. Kitchens have truly become the fulcrum of family life. So when this young couple purchased their first home, the vintage 1960s split-level plan was not quite right.

The kitchen was a narrow galley-style tucked into a rear corner of the main floor. And although it had recently been remodeled, it was confining and not conducive to entertaining and growing a family.

The point of arrival was an open space with entry wall about 12-15 feet from the front door. To the right, the living room had a focal fireplace and the adjacent dining room made an “L” back to where the kitchen was tucked behind that previously mentioned entry wall.

So this progressive young couple thought way beyond merely opening the wall creating a pass-through bar to better connect the kitchen to the living spaces. No, they said ” Let’s blast this baby out of here!” And with that they proceeded to visualize the point of arrival being the actual kitchen in full-view as guests arrived. Hello!!!!!

The former kitchen containment was revealed to present the new elongated welcoming bar counter-top, luminous glass pendants and supplemental recessed down lights, to meet and greet all who pass through their front door! Original hardwood floors were refinished in a dark walnut stain.

Their priorities were to create a larger, more functional kitchen with a clean, modern look and feel while making all open to better interact with their soon-to-arrive baby!

The clean white on white finishes in the kitchen are fresh and crisp. Lest you think they saved and added to existing cabinets, they did not – all cabinets are new!

And this might be considered gilding the lily, but we added a splash of artistic expression when we hand-painted the small squares in the new brushed stainless cabinet pulls to give them a bit of extra pizzazz!!!

By using the Carrara mosaic as a wall-covering, rather than merely a back-splash, the walls get a truly finished built-environment “read.”

The upper bar counter-top bows at bar-level to offer a more comfortable conversation scene.

The living room became a cozy sitting area off this wonderfully open kitchen and dining area.

Existing brick walls were softened with a grey-taupe to contrast with the white trim making it POP!

The fireplace now has a complimentary new Carrara mosaic in a diamond pattern to coordinate with the new herringbone mosaic of the kitchen wall.

And baby accoutrements adds colorful animation to the beautifully finished scene!

“HELLO!” they say. “Welcome to our beautiful new home!”

The Seeds Which Result in Enthusiastic Inspiration.

When is the seed planted for a child who might just pursue a career in the arts, architecture or related design fields? How did the aptitude and interest first present itself? When are varied interests honed into a focused passion? If you’re reading this as a “creative,” do you remember the earliest exercises flexing your creativity?

As an budding interior designer, I always enjoyed changing my room and futzing around the house arranging accessories and still-life groupings. Color was always important as were patterns and textures. Balance seemed intuitive too. I loved visiting art galleries and I became aware that I noticed and possessed an appreciation for art in its many forms, styles and media. I derived great joy from recognizing beauty, potential and the creative process. It followed to the out-of-doors too as I loved the gardens, layers of trees and made truly organic “forts” in the log pile nestled in the fallen oak and tulip poplar leaves of my childhood.

I also practiced landscape design – trimming English ivy meticulously from underneath so as not to whack off the front edges. I created exotic fern gardens by finding indigenous ferns in the woods and bringing them into the less wild pockets of our wooded backyard – arranging and placing them just right. Spider plants procreated their dangling off-spring that I trimmed and rooted in multiple clay pots lining our patio wall waiting to mature over the summer and be presented as gifts to admiring plant lovers.

Upon returning from a lively Padres and Cardinals baseball game last night, we were greeted by a spot-lit city and pompous parallel parade. Our boldly preciously precocious 7 year granddaughter

had created a magical world with all manner of pets, creatures, super heroes and trinkets adorning the architecture and riding in the parade of colorful vehicles.

The lighting was particularly effective as it cast shadows and illuminated the many elements and characters that animated the scene. This is the perfect temptation for rival siblings to destroy. One sweeping sword or outstretched arm would send this amazing project to rubble. Tonight however there was no such rivalry resulting in destruction. Rather it was protected and revered until we arrived home for the presentation.

“You like my city, don’t you?” was the confident query – set-forth with an affirmative assumption – regardless of the questioning format, of the comment she delivered. Yes the city and parallel parade was quite exceptional. So much so that it inspired thoughtful observation and examination including this writing today.

As I knelt down and captured various angles of the structures, towers, tiers, columns, pediments and facades with my trusty phone, I realized that this took a tremendous amount of material. The raw wooden building blocks were nostalgically familiar – the very same blocks, triangles, square and round columns, bricks and cubes with which I had built towering structures as a child. Creativity can certainly be spawned with limited resources and often results in remarkably ingenious results, but as looked around this particular scene, I discovered baskets, bins, boxes and piles of things. Things with which to create a limitless fantasy world.

These, paired with her wonderful imagination, were the tools of this creative child who had a treasure trove of parts and pieces, characters and vehicles providing countless components waiting for the imagination to assemble into this and other amazing scenes. Singing while she works, it is evident that this child is over-flowing with artistic expression.

The fantastic architecture and design we admire today was spawned by creative minds using existing tools or inventing new elements to create and ultimately construct seemingly unimaginable buildings around the world. Yet they were imagined and they became realities from fantastic dreams and ideas, bravery and determination. A creative will that was once a seed of enthusiastic inspiration.

Happy Mother’s Day to all, with a particular emphasis on mine for all of her creativity and encouragement though the years, of my many phases of artistic exploration, appreciation and expression.

10 Tips for Remodeling: To Improve and Enhance

I’m currently working on an urban loft apartment. The criteria with which I was presented, upon our first meeting, consisted of three items: One – to enclose an open bedroom to provide privacy, Two – to provide alternate access to the shared master bathroom. (There is also a powder room, but the shower and tub were only accessible through the master bedroom), Three – because it is a relatively small footprint with voluminous tall ceilings, he was hoping to create a small second tier for additional square-footage. I understood these items to be his intended “improvements.”

While on-site, at the first meeting, it was (and is always) impossible to limit the observations to only those isolated areas of concern without seeing all else that is occurring around the space. Therefore, I consider the extra comments that I offered for minor changes to be “enhancements.” These are things that have not had or do not have priority in the eyes of the client and might have even gone unnoticed forever. Items such as adding a wing wall at the front entry to screen view from the door through the kitchen, concealing a new tall closet of matching cabinetry directly behind the wall to add storage to the kitchen, add a clerestory window and bookcase with cabinets to the new wall between the master bedroom and living area for borrowed light and additional storage!

Occasionally these offerings are met with a shrug, hmmm or a “maybe” and not really considered to be of great value, but more often than not they are greeted with exclamations like ‘Oh, I never would have thought of that.” “What a cool idea!” “I would love to have that.” And it is with this enthusiasm that my client responded.

So when considering remodeling or identifying the primary improvements needed, begin with the priorities then layer design details of additional enhancements and you will create a master plan that can be executed over time in phases in a preferred or practical order of priority.

1. Begin with your list to improve the function and enjoyment of your environment.

2.Prioritize the list and guesstimate costs to establish a starting conversation regarding budget.

3. In addition to cost – consider pairing like-kinds of things together such as adding or removing a wall which involves framing, sheetrock, texture, paint – it might be cost-effective to do all items related to these trades even if they are not the same priority.

4. The distinction between improving and enhancing is a fine line because improving does enhance, however I consider improving more practical and enhancing with embellishments that are less critical, but make further improvements and enhance the quality of the space. 5. Storage is always welcome. Look for opportunities to add cabinets, vertical spaces to maximize your footprint, second-tier countertops, raise cabinet heights even furniture to provide additional storage. https://bit.ly/2GZglUa

6. Passing daylight through to interior spaces is more common in offices than in residences, yet for the same reasons of “borrowing” light in commercial spaces, skylights, vertical slivers of glass, transoms and clerestories are valuable assets when it comes to bringing daylight into pockets of darkness. https://bit.ly/2HCddKU

7.Evaluate your existing lighting. Adding dimmable ambient light to rooms to supplement existing down-lights such as pendants in kitchens, translucent lamps shades on table and floor lamps, even well-concealed under-cabinet lights will add control and mood enhancements. Spot light wall art and sculptural pieces, illuminate corners with up-lights (up through trees, behind chairs), and consider changing to LED lamping (bulbs) for longer-life, cost -effectiveness and a full range of colors!

This up-light filters through the plant from behind the chair casting interesting shadows and illuminating an otherwise dark corner.

8. When considering new flooring know your needs as there are so many options for soft under-foot, freeze-proof to carry outside, ease of maintenance, durability, non-slip, and of course the many aesthetic preferences.

This interlocking vinyl floor has remarkable graining look, color and texture and provides soft “give” underfoot. These new luxury vinyls defy our early perceptions of faux finishes.

What’s Trending? Do YOU Need An Interior Designer?

As we move forward into this new year…the story is the same – only some details have changed or been added to past stories. By that I mean if you search for trends – they are ALWAYS all over the place.

We do find years when really new ideas take the stage – like when the shift from plastic laminate to stone slab counter-tops became a valid trend. It was a trend brought about by improved technology, shipping, cost and ultimately availability. After that, the engineered surfaces that grew from this trend broadening the offerings – explored color, texture and pattern and continue to introduce new options.

Myriad surface materials mimic natural stone – when is it preferable over natural stone?

Engineered stone products offer many bold, solid colors from pure white to amazing primary colors.

So right now bold color accents are in, wall covering that made a come-back a couple of years ago is sticking for the time being and with newer bolder prints. Fabrics too – prints are bold and large scale!

Wood on walls is trending. Printed concrete tile is the big thing. Farmhouse sinks – in different finishes than customary stainless or white. Vintage light fixtures – enhanced with new technology and lamping.

So, does that mean I can’t have a white sink or shouldn’t have a stainless one? I should use printed concrete tiles in my kitchen or bathroom? If my home lacks a bold print wall covering am I missing something? If I’m not sporting some raw concrete, am I out of style? Is the wall full of family photos in my bedroom passé?

Surrounding by existing vintage pieces and family heirlooms, the new living room pieces added some contrasting, contemporary lines with clean, crisp, classic, blue and white fabric patterns.

Oh, the pressure to get it right!!!! Oh so many choices – how do I decide? Do I have to start over? I want to be in style – but I don’t know what that even means between today and 6 months from now. I like neutrals – am I dating myself?

Be calm and carry on…that’s why interior designers exist!! Sorting through all the conflicting, changing information and choices can be exhausting! Just get on Pinterest and look for any subject about an interior – window treatments, living rooms, bedrooms, wall treatments, flooring…with each year, the choices expand. The permutations seem endless. HOW does one ever decide?

Mark my word, we will be flooded with interiors plastered with printed concrete tiles, faux printed concrete tiles, filament light bulbs and jarring color contrasts, in the coming months and perhaps even years…These trends have already made their mark. But it will be the creative manner, in which the various printed concrete tiles are used and when the vintage style of filament fixtures is appropriate and effective. What colors are used (where, how and with what) is what will set a few exceptional installations apart from myriad uninspired, if not confused, versions.

An effective interior designer knows what is trendy versus a trend designed and positioned for lasting impact. This is a major part of the equation. Existing conditions with regard to architectural style, existing furnishings, personal preferences, budget, priorities, all play roles in the design process.

A young teen’s bedroom was recently redesigned to reflect her developing tastes and preferences. Bold color and a variety of geometrics and patterns make a bold, fresh statement.

You don’t want to be coerced into making changes just because new style suggestions are being presented. Trends DON’T RULE – despite the fact that the design community wants you to think they do, in order to continually change things up! Don’t be a victim of too many directives regarding what is in style. It’s intimidating and mostly due to access. We have access to so many opinions, on-line sites, magazines and advertisements that the pressure, conflicting information and choices can be ridiculous.

It’s YOUR interior, your style, your comfort and functionality. Yes, it’s all about YOU and yours.

Remodeling? How to Embrace Existing Conditions – Celebrate the Story

This happening scene provided fabulous fodder, to observe existing conditions being incorporated into a design, for great benefit on many levels. Applicable to all remodel projects – see what you think!

In this case, Night Club design. The styles are many, but the concept is of a commonality comprised of a few basic functions – a fun place to socialize, meet people and enjoy the entertainment of the overall scene often including live performances. We probably all picture the image of a flashy, glitzy environment.

We were recently in a most unusual space that combined the glitz and bling you might expect with a “nightclub” atmosphere, but juxtaposed with rustic finishes that were unique to the original architecture. This brick expressed in some of the remaining structural elements – walls and column/arched spans of structure – was warm and rich providing an unexpected pleasing combination that so easily might have been eliminated – concealed behind slick new finishes.

To play-up the vintage aspects of the space, ornate traditional chandeliers were suspended amidst myriad dangling strands of sparkling, golden LED lights. These provided a glittering glow of ambient light in the upper reaches of the space effecting both the downstairs and upper level of the club. This mixed lighting treatment was obviously the eye-catching emphasis of the interior.

Ample light was provided by the luminous chandeliers and thousands of dangling LED pin-dot lights along with the indirect lighting of the back-bar shelves. Therefore, the large steel domes that hung suspended over the bar needed not to contribute ambient light, but were limited to effectively cast direct downward light on the bar surface. Their golden interiors provided a warm glow while the exterior surface disappeared into the darkness.

The bar was quite simple and raw, yet read in enough of an interesting and complex fashion, to compliment the scene. The design was sufficient in its components and indirect lighting worked well with all the other design decisions.

The simple Tolix-styled stools were an understated easy fit with the other surprisingly raw materials of the bar.

To answer the need for friendly group conversations, there were comfortable places to gather with zoned seating areas of tufted leather sofas and leopard-patterned rugs, wooden grouping tables, then hi-top tables with stools and finally barstools along the length of the bar. The various areas provided options for patrons to pick the most inviting or appropriate spot to enjoy the atmosphere with friends.

Having choices in any hospitality setting is invaluable. It allows the patrons to make their own decision how best to utilize and enjoy the space. It answers different needs and appeals to different people for different reasons, therefore inviting a variety of patrons to invest their time and money in the establishment. A broader reach of clientele. A broader client base.

I’ve mentioned more than once that having restroom design follow the theme and quality, of the rest of the interior, is imperative. As it relates to night clubs, it is often the meeting-ground for dating, meeting new people, attracting new people and therefore, the restroom should promote attractive feelings of approval and confidence in the guests.

Jazzing up the restrooms in keeping with the jazzy feeling of the club environment should be a natural continuation of the design scheme. That means mirrors – full length – not merely above the sinks, good lighting without down-lights to cast unappealing shadows on the guests.

Here the placement of sinks outside the restrooms frees up space in the stall areas, while adding interest to the extended restroom area. The design theme presents free-standing bureaus for the sink cabinets. Often shared sinks are used in these anti-room set-ups, but in this case opposing sides of the vestibule provided an attractive vanity area for men and a separate one for women.

What was so inspiring and interesting as we scanned the interior were the various zones all within this complex mix of original, traditional architectural elements and adding traditional if not vintage lighting fixtures paired with modern high-tech lighting effects and large brilliant monitors featuring exotic, playful, getaway beach videos. It worked.

Have you ever encountered a structure that at first glance did not comply with the supposed new program? Awkward supports, raw materials, exposed mechanical…so ,many “unfortunate” things to get in the way of your design. Often the “imagined” design over-rides the reality of the moment. The challenge is to allow the moment – the reality of the existing conditions – to participate in the process rather than being briskly eliminated without thorough consideration.

And the additional bonus might often be cost-savings and budget stretching while not betraying that benefit at expense of the finished design. Brilliant to have incorporated the “whatever it is” – wasn’t that creative and hence, interesting!! OK – I’ll take that!

To have concealed or negated the architecture would have been almost criminal – certainly a loss of architectural integrity and textural interest.

The crime of missing opportunities like the seemingly conflicting traditional elements with the need to be glitzy and modern is to be too one-directional . It’s like having “design-blinders” on that direct and focus a theme without recognizing the value of thoughtful salvage of content, contrast and context.

All of what we observed applies to both residential and commercial design. The takeaway is to consider existing conditions and, if applicable, embrace them. Give thoughtful consideration to the opportunities before glossing over them, concealing them or eliminating them altogether. Try to appreciate the gifts that might escape you if you insist on unnecessarily hammering and manipulating a space into submission – design submission. Rather, let it tell a story and contribute to the design process – which would more than likely result in a more unique and creative end project for that thoughtful integration of the existing elements.

Atmos and Eating by Design

How do you select a restaurant? As a patron, what makes you dine out? How do you select your preferred dining experience? I’m talking about casual and easy or even more a more in-depth gastronomic event.

When it comes to casual, quick and easy, I still want the experience to have personality – a pleasing personality and great flavors. Personality is atmosphere. Great flavors is the kitchen. Service might be “step-up and place your order” or table-side wait-staff. In either case, I want it to be a pleasing experience. Why would anyone want it to be difficult or unpleasant? Perhaps that lies in the definitions of the beholder. What is difficult or unpleasant and the various degrees thereof is not be the same for everyone.

Throughout my childhood, I remember my mother and her peers reference “atmos.” It was important. It came up often. “Does the place have atmos?” Or “what great atmos.” Atmosphere – it is the feeling you get in an environment. It is the feeling a place emits. I don’t ever recall it being used in the negative – such as this place has horrible atmos…rather, like ambiance, it was reserved to compliment.

We now hear “vibe.” The place has a good vibe – but not limited to only compliment, a place can have a decidedly bad vibe too! Is it just the saying “If you can’t say anything nice about something, don’t say anything at all?” Perhaps we are less polite than the previous generations. Yet, constructive criticism let’s you know what makes your patrons pleased. Truth be told…be honest with discretion.

As a restaurant owner, it seems that erring on the side of greater numbers sharing the same opinion of easy and pleasing would capture the greater share of the demographic. Therefore, studies are out there to determine the value of ambiance and presentation. Starting with defining the description of your eatery…who are you and what and how do you serve? What is your “brand?” Whether funky or fine, dining should be worth the visit.

I read a few excerpts from a fascinating new book, Gastrophysics, The New Science of Eating by Charles Spence. In it, he touches on the importance of atmosphere. He observes the value of interior design even as it relates to how much people eat and how much they spend as a result of atmospheric influences.

Another great read for understanding the art of a successful restaurant is Daniel Boardman’s Your First Restaurant – An Essential Guide. As an “essential aspect of your concept” Boardman identifies why the “thoughtfulness of the interior design” communicates to the patron a lot about the service and food that one might expect to receive.

Tacos on paper – porque no?

From lighting to the shape of the plate, ambiance and presentation are key features in a successful eating establishment.

All the way from candles on a white linen table cloth to a handsome juicy burger in a basket lined with paper, in the context of the environment – design details matter.

Some reading this might say they don’t care. Fine. Perhaps on the surface, they think it doesn’t matter. They don’t realize the effectiveness of well thought-out details. They take these things for granted. Yet these details can make or break a dining experience – from casual to fine.

Next time you eat out, look around, smell the smells, hear the sounds, see the colors, notice the lighting sources and levels, feel the furniture and – have I not mentioned it? – check out the restrooms!!!!

Pay attention and you might be surprised at what you discover about your sensitivities.

What you hear while dining contributes greatly to the pleasure or discomfort of your time spent in the environment. It either contributes positively or detracts annoyingly. Listen to the sounds next time you dine. At home or out, notice voices, chairs being moved, glassware, music, kitchen noises, traffic…see what detracts, what enhances or what might be considered neutral.

Interior designers are considering it all – the theme, atmosphere, colors, artwork, furniture, lighting, table dressings, serving pieces, fabrics, textures and even sound. Whether casual or more formal, these design details can make or break the success of the business.

Even if the food is exceptional, too bright lighting, ineffective colors, uncomfortable furniture or confused design elements can result in negating even the best chef’s efforts. It is a package. It is about the whole. It is a multi-sensory experience. Buen provecho!

A Most Illuminating Lighting Course Proves – It Exists!

As is often the case, after attending an engaging and informative continuing education class, I am compelled to share at least a fraction of the energy that I experienced today. When a class is good, it is energizing. This was a most illuminating lighting course!

We know that as interior designers that light plays a significant role in creating a scene. Whether task lighting, ambient lighting, spot lighting or washes of color – light plays an important role. What’s so exciting and compelling is the technology that is so rapidly changing the possibilities!

The profound change is a result of the perfected application of Light Emitting Diodes – LED lighting. Lynne Wilkinson takes the complexity of physics and speaks in plain language with a humorous and entertaining delivery distilling that which is incredibly complex into digestible information.

So today I want to impart a tiny bit of the exciting content of this day. If a child asked you – “what is light?” How might you answer that? Um…well…it’s uh…Electromagnetic radiation. Duh! After clearing that hurdle, we settled into distinguishing the technology between incandescent and fluorescent and a number of other lighting sources. We discussed temperature Kelvin, luminescence, illumination and the atomic composition of protons, neutrons and electrons that are involved. So how is this interesting to YOU?

Well…inasmuch as we in the field have kept step with much of this terminology throughout our careers, and the sci-fi interpretations of the possibilities – the future is HERE! If you just look at I-Phones being only 10 years old, yes, 2007 – we’ve come a long way baby!! Nearly anything you can imagine already exists! And if it doesn’t yet, the brains in the incubators are racing to discover and invent the next iteration of these amazing possibilities!! Look at these cool dots and dashes dramatically streaking across a living room ceiling!

You probably know that LEDs are energy efficient. Have you noticed how dramatically their price has come down in the last, say, three years? They used to be $50 and now they are under $10.. They burn for 50,000 hours…but as they diminish, the quality of their light changes – they will burn long after the accuracy of their illumination has changed. Do you care?

So many health issues are still being discovered with regard to the effectiveness of lighting. Circadian rhythms – how your body is biologically on a timer. How it needs rest and waking hours. What interferes with the natural melatonin in your system that can affect your health. Dark is for sleep. Blue light versus red light can interfere with your good sleep? Here’s a hint – don’t leave computer screens or cell phones on in your bedroom – get rid of the clocks and other light-emitting devices when you are trying to sleep. AVOID the cool colors – blue especially.

To take this to a higher level of interaction, artificial lighting can be “tuned.” We know it can be dimmed and change color – but tuning is the technology of changing the temperature and related color to compliment the activity in the space. Your living room can be tuned to track the time of day to compliment warm early morning, bright cool mid day, dimming down to the warmth of an evening glow. Do you care? Maybe not today – but to better organize and track a busy day, this can be soothing to compliment your morning coffee…energize you into a more productive mode as the day progresses and calm you as the day closes. It might be handy if you lived in Scandinavia where the days are shorter and the desire to create a sense of daylight’s progression is real.

In an operating room – do you want your surgeon to see well into your body parts? By tuning the room in zones, you can place certain colors of light over the surgery to better illuminate and contrast the focal point or dim the light to read monitors better (as in many endoscopic procedures where they go in with a camera and don’t even see the action except on the monitors which are better read with a darkened surrounding quality of light or lack thereof), or brighten other areas where medical implements, keyboards, etc need brighter light to do the job. The understanding and ability to control these various light levels, colors and luminescence is becoming very apparent. Might ultimately be invaluable.

Back to interior design applications and concerns – the idea is to create effective, appropriate light and not see the source. I have always said this especially in the realm of landscape lighting – yes outside. I never use the “runway lights,” rather I chose to conceal the light source and have it spill, wash, spot and filter without giving away the source of the light. It is more subtle, effective, natural, soft, and pleasing. So in a kitchen, don’t let the under-counter lights be spotty, reflected on any adjacent dark or shiny surface, use smaller aperture ceiling fixtures (cans), hockey pucks in cabinets create shadows…with all the new LED tapes, fixtures and diffusers these faux pas are very avoidable.

As recently as 18 months ago we were remodeling a bar and wanted to use LED tape the full-length beneath the long countertop – but the cost was significant. Today, that cost is a fraction of what it was. So I might be re-visiting that bar detail!!!

So many lights can be field modified cut and shaped. With the perfection of Organic LEDs, seemingly limitless possibilities exist. Back to now – smart homes can do so much from an app on your phone and lighting is a huge part of that control. You already know that you can turn you lights on and off from your phone on a beach in Tahiti. But did you know that your phone can be as small as a lipstick tube or small flashlight and have a retractable screen of flexible OLED – easy to hold, pack, carry and with a simple tug, click or push of a button reveal a thin full screen? Architecture and interior design benefit greatly from this technology, but are probably the last to be jumping on the bandwagon. This technology is introduced in so many other aspects of our world before it gets to mere offices and residences. Fabric panel walls that have lights IN the fabric and can be controlled for color and movement, resin furniture glowing from inside that can be used outside in all-weather, stair treads that sparkle with glass embedded into them and coffee tables that have pressure sensitivity that when you touch them they respond. So many of these creative applications are already very cost-effective and remarkably accessible.

Glowing ceiling layers that once were inconvenient to replace lamps (bulbs) often were left dark rather than scale the heights to maintain. Now the long lasting light sources produce their glow for many years.

Fashion is also enhanced with the advent of these light sources in the actual fabrics. Models sporting luminous layers, glowing translucence, sparkling luminescence adding elements to clothing imagined. Think about draperies!
