Hidden talent – that remarkable artwork that appears (seemingly) out of nowhere, on a par with great masters of the medium. I considered this element of surprise – looking back several decades to a local painter, Wilson Hurley, who had more than one very different, distinguished career and diverse life experiences before he delved deeply into his passion for painting in his 40s. Once exposed, his paintings revealed his extraordinary talents and he become a nationally recognized treasure for his sweeping landscapes and a variety of other subjects.
On that note, I have just gotten off the phone with a very good friend, in Florida, Houston Evans. I have recently learned that he is a passionate weekend photographer! An amazing photo appeared in a Facebook post and I was astonished by the enchanting image, color and composition. I was instantly captivated – and curious. Upon closer inspection, his stylish swashbuckling signature made me realize that this hobby was subtly becoming more than that – yes, he had his mark digitally mastered and is probably THE perfect brand for his diverse and stunning work.
As I quizzed him about his interest in photography, I learned that he attributes his eye for art, color and design to his mother who’s side of the family has spawned other talented artists, in his generation. He has been posting on Instagram for quite some time – hundreds of images. I didn’t know. I didn’t “follow.” He is modest about his photos and does it for his own amusement, pure pleasure and personal enjoyment – that he likes to share. “I don’t do it to imagine it on someone’s wall.” Yet this observer believes that there is where it absolutely should be! He plays with the medium and all the tools and tricks of the trade. He enjoys the freedom of experimentation. The results are controlled, yet spontaneous. From high resolution to fuzzy pixels that require distance to assimilate. Up close for precise detail and soft smears for imagination to take hold, the variety of clarity or lack thereof are a part of the experience and expression.
From my interior designer’s perspective, his bold images would be key focal points in the drama of architectural spaces – interiors from Miami to Honolulu and on around the world!!! I can see the towering orchids in hotel lobbies, bars, restaurants and swanky condos everywhere!!! I am eager to find a project, for which his work would be the key to the scheme, unveiling a spontaneous design resulting from the inspiration of the image.
In the beginning, the photos stood on their own merits. Evans keeps his originals – some of which remain just that – in their original form, while others are tweaked or more radically manipulated to create stunning subjects and compositions.
I can see his limitless fantasies contributing to the imaginative narrative of Meow Wolf, gracing hotel lobbies with larger-than-life orchid explosions and commanding condo walls with magical statements of tropical color, subject and form. Translucent installations of LED illumination could result in magnificent walls of design influence.
The digital age is advancing with such a pace that we are
all caught-up in photos of food, whacky selfies and sunsets on fire…but
having an artist’s eye, to truly see the potential and master the tools that
are now available – using them to create valid and valued masterpieces of art,
is extraordinary.
I truly believe that his work is exceptional – full of heart and soul – and spectacular fun!!!!!!!! I’m thrilled to learn of these images and now enjoy the continued progress of his discoveries and creations. Let’s see where this goes!!!!! He just might be coming out of hiding!!
Inspiration for centerpieces – here – a neutral color scheme – white on white on white…Often limited to weddings, take a tip from a social phenomenon – Diner en Blanc for dramatic centerpieces! Any of which could be ablaze with seasonal color – depending upon your desired theme. And with the advancements in LED lighting, the colors are limitless and instantly changeable.
The Diner en Blanc is an international event that began in Paris, 1988. An amazing concept that began with an invitation among friends to an elegant al fresco affair. This unique gathering was prestigious and decadent.
The remarkable event spread around the world and Albuquerque has celebrated this creative event for several years. This is my second experience with this white fantasy. Every year the venue is kept secret only to be revealed at the last moment when attendees are assembled and usually transported on buses to the destination. This surprise location was right across from the designated gathering places downtown. And instead of boarding a bus each group, expecting just that, cued up as though to go aboard – only to be led single file across the street to the expansive Civic Plaza!
This year with the Hyatt Regency team screaming with creativity from the table dressings…to the phenomenal food…to the fabulous frivolity – it was magic!
Asked to wear white, bring your own tables, chairs, table
dressings, centerpieces – all in white – the evening unfolds with exciting
flurries of fabric, flowers, statuary, lights – all intended to make a
spectacular statement for each group’s table.
Imagine all of this theatrical staging with 2,000 performers (we) in one enormous space – outside in the perfection of a last ditch of summer evening. It is a remarkable event.
As I strolled through the tables capturing photos of the various “tablescapes”, I realized that the creativity was applicable to so many possibilities of table dressings – with color added!
So enjoy seeing these creations and imagine them in seasonal splendor – fall now…winter coming…spring bursting forth and summer ablaze with color – for your upcoming parties throughout the year!

Racing through the Albuquerque Sunport several times this summer, I had seen in swift passing the blindingly brilliant bling of the Low Rider exhibit that had been set-up at the end of June. Last week I had an opportunity, while waiting in the arrival area, to peruse the many amazing rides that commanded the concourse.
This powerful art exhibit of the unique Latino culture of Low Riders represents great personal pride and emotional attachment on behalf of the owners and artists (often one and the same).
These finished products are almost like songs…from memorials to love interests, family and friendships – they express heartfelt emotions to present and share with the world.
Once stereotypically thought to be limited to the bad boys taunting law enforcement with their wild paint jobs, gleaming chrome, bold moves, wild suspension, blaring music in a defiant statement of cultural expression, these amazing art pieces have since been recognized by distinguished museums worldwide for their exquisite attention to detail and the stories they tell.
In this exhibit, these moving statements of artistic expression are all home-grown. Yes, each made here in New Mexico it makes it all the more relevant.
Visitors to the Sunport have this wonderful opportunity – up close and personal – to examine the seemingly flawless machines adorned with sensational color, pattern and design. “Kids” of all ages will appreciate this show!
Each as though a canvas for the artist…motorcycles, kid’s versions and cars adorned with glitter, shine, polish and paint colors all contributing to the each unique statement. From airbrush to tedious handwork and limitless patient detailing results in exciting assemblages.

the culture here.
By highlighting these fine, local examples the City hopes to elevate the art form on its merits and dismiss some of the stigmas attached with the stereotypes.
And we all will have a little fun imagining the thrill of taking a ride in/on one of these beauties!!!
If the Basilica in my last blog didn’t get your juices
flowing about incredible public art spaces, the Library of Congress was our
next stop. Yes, it houses nearly everything having to do with writing,
recording, documenting…but the building itself is amazing! It in itself is a
wealth of artistic detailing. The interior has more gold leaf – not gold paint
– but hammered metal gold leaf – than any other building in our Nation’s
Capital. Inside and out, the craftsmanship of the stone carvings and
architectural embellishments is magnificent. This inestimable landmark is so
much more than the sober name suggests.
We parked in the garage of Union Station and walked the few
blocks past the Supreme Court and the Capitol Building to our destination of
the Library of Congress. The brilliant blue skies behind the bright white
edifices belied what some regarded as the oppressive heat. I however am a heat
freak – it’s summer – bring it on!
Symbolism is executed with every inch of the design details
both inside and out of the imposing Library of Congress. Ascending the exterior
stairs sets the stage for arriving at a monument of immeasurable wealth of
human dissertation and history. Here I can only touch on the tip of the
iceberg…
From an inauspicious beginning of modest expectations to
greater expanses with devastating fiery catastrophes in between, the Library of
Congress has an amazing story. Thomas Jefferson played a significant role in
re-building the foundation of what we now have today.
While waiting for the tour to begin in the magnificent
Thomas Jefferson building, we were directed to two remarkably entertaining exhibits
on the lower level – a Gershwin gathering and a Hope homage.
The George and Ira Gershwin Room is a tribute to the two
brothers and their contribution to American music. This nostalgic and very
familiar subject matter makes you hum and tap your toes. The exhibit presents
George’s piano and custom-designed writing desk, Ira’s table and typewriter,
self portraits and myriad documents that trace their lives and amazing careers.
The Hope for America Exhibit focuses on the varied careers
of Bob Hope along with other recognizable entertainers. The exhibit offers the
satirical humor – crossing party lines – both socially and politically for
which Hope was so appreciated, admired and beloved. Hope received the U.S.
Congressional Medal of Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his
commitment, in his nearly 50 year service, entertaining the men and women of
the armed forces abroad.
As the actual tour began, we were introduced with a short
film as an overview of what was to come. We were then guided up a staircase and
gathered in what was a most astonishingly beautiful, expansive space full of
piercing, daylight, sunbeams glancing off incredibly detailed architectural
stone carving and sculpture. Vast murals, vaults and arches in the 360 degrees
of beauty from floor to voluminous ceiling was staggering.
” Founded in 1800, the Library of Congress is the
nation’s oldest federal cultural institution. The Library seeks to spark the
imagination and creativity and to further human understanding and wisdom by
providing access to knowledge through its magnificent collections, programs and
exhibitions.” Thomas Jefferson stepped-in to save the Library of Congress
after a few inauspicious starts. Not
enough time devoted here to a history lesson – learn more at https://www.loc.gov/ – but this grand space into which we entered is
the Thomas Jefferson Building.
The focus of this blog is to share a bit of the art and
decorative embellishments of this stunning architectural environment –
beginning with the Commemorative Arch by Olin L. Warner (1844-1896) featuring a
young man to the left and a bearded elder man on the right signifying that the
process of learning never ceases…
Grand staircases on opposing sides of the space are adorned
with carvings of “putti” – Italian for little boys – as they are
pictured representing various occupations from gardeners to astronomers – the depiction
of each vocation is fascinating with what it means to have that respective
knowledge to pursue one’s career path.
Beneath the string of putti are representations of the 4
corners of the globe depicting figures of each, Asia paired with Europe and
American paired with Africa.
Minerva, the Roman Goddess of Learning and Wisdom is aptly
featured in a series of statues and images.
Most fascinating to me, up in an adjacent domed ceiling area
was the “Evolution of the Written Word,” a series of lunettes by John
White Alexander (1856-11915). Having previously written about the importance of
handwriting for a million reasons that go beyond, but are directly connected
to, this depicted evolution, I found this to be simple, yet profound. It is a beautifully
rendered and fascinatingly distilled artistic expression of a very significant
timeline. Beginning with The Cairn – we see them stacked stones on beaches for
fun and on paths in the wilderness as markers, but here Alexander renders
primitive man communicating by stacking stones to possibly mark the dead, a
passage or a place of significance.
As the history progresses, Oral Tradition becomes the means
of communication – but only/obviously in personal contact. Words are created.
Then Egyptian Hieroglyphics enter the scene with images representing words
depicted on surfaces.
Picture Writing on animal skin – and ultimately more refined
to vellum – becomes a more mobile means of communication.
Theologians recording ancient stories of biblical history
brought monks to the art of the written word in compilations of the Bible as
the first manuscripts/books became recorded.
And then an exponential leap in communication came with the invention of John Gutenberg ca. 1400-1468 of the Printing Press! Asia had its versions of printing machines even before Gutenberg, but inspired by seeing grapes at harvests being “pressed,” he put that concept into the process of placing individual letters in place and pressing them onto paper. Western Europe then had a movable metal type process that increased productivity of printed material – printing the first ……in Western Europe. The tour guide sadly explained to us that Gutenberg died a pauper as his investors, not patient with economic fluctuations, excused him from his rightful place in the business and left him to live out his life only to receive proper recognition posthumously.
It is the first complete book
extant in the West and is also the earliest to be printed from movable type. This
rare version is printed on vellum.
Unfortunately, at this point in the tour, we had to excuse
ourselves with a quick wave and thanks to our guide as we were departing later
that afternoon. Before leaving the building though, we dashed upstairs to
discover the main Reading Room – entering from a way upper tier, we had a
bird’s-eye view of this grand space. The scale was daunting and the spectacular
architectural detail was breath-taking. The WOW-factor was palpable!
Eight giant marble columns each support 10-foot-high
allegorical female figures in plaster representing characteristic features of
civilized life and thought: Religion, Commerce, History, Art, Philosophy,
Poetry, Law and Science.
The 16 bronze statues upon the balustrades of the
galleries are a tribute to men whose lives symbolized the thought and activity
represented by the plaster statues.
And with that – we only had enough experience and education about this incredible resource and monument of artistic beauty to whet our appetite for more and surely lure us there again for more information about all that comprises this amazing public gift and resource.
There are so many wonderful things to see and do – get out there and see it!!!
Is your story important? Does anyone care about your story?
And what does this have to do with interior design?
Whether you are marketing yourself or your business, your story has merit. It is about identity, branding and connecting. It is about letting people in a bit. It is about sharing history, experiences and process. It is about your unique reason for doing what you do.
For the past several months, I have been working with a
client on a combination of interior design, graphic design, exterior
design…it is all intertwined. A successful design laces together all these
design elements. And that brings me to “the story.”
Even Facebook features a section to tell “your
story.” Yet, my client resisted
presenting/using the story of this new business venture as a part of the
design. He told me that was “so seventies.” That he had read that it
was a dated concept that was no longer relevant. I begged to differ. For months
I begged to differ! We agreed to disagree.
I believe that this is similar to many interpretations of design. What might be considered “dated” is often the manner in which it is used or done – not the thing itself. Whether a color, a font, a style of furniture, a wall tile or wallpaper, an architectural detail or form…so many design elements are considered dated due to their context. Often, this is fair to observe. But, mix it up a bit and use things differently or with other different elements than the original trend presented and – Voila! You have a perfectly valid, even fabulous design – think outside the box!
The idea of a “story” is not unlike the “mission statement” which became a standard feature decades ago in every company’s presentation on printed media, lobby plaques, conference room walls, break rooms… Some say it is passe, but when something is good and has meaning – re-consider. Like “the story”, “the mission statement” identifies goals and intent…when paired with the story, it provides an overview of the who, what, why that inquiring patrons want to know.
So back to the story…about “the story.” When a business or any concept is respected or
liked, revered or praised, it is natural for people to wonder “How did
they get started?” “How did they come up with this idea?”
“What is their history in this business?” These are common questions
that clever ideas or designs invite. So why not satisfy that interest, create a
buzz…Let’s give them something to talk about!!!
In this world of disconnection, making connections seem all
the more important. What used to be a natural exchange – of communication,
ideas, sharing – is now something that has to be inserted with greater
intention.
So this new business, for which I have been designing, is a barbeque establishment. There are a million. They have certain things in common. Without my enumerating them here – can you envision some common denominators that you might connect with barbeque joints? As is true with any venture, I asked: “What makes this one different? Better barbeque? Maybe. Cool interior? Hopefully. Are those the only unique traits? Is that the memorable take-away? It certainly isn’t a bad one – the idea is to have great food – and a fun environment, but what else might contribute to the experience of this barbecue being unforgettable? What might you have, to tell your friends, to spread the word?”
My opinion was a combination of an intriguing brand and “the story.” But before I go further, they coined a word to express their beer brewing prowess – exbeerience! This will enter into the story as we go along.
Now maybe my opinion about their story was so worthy of consideration because there was so much to this story. That certainly helps. It happens to be a great story with layers of interesting twists and turns – riddled with history and significance. Plus, it had a local interest angle that has the potential to create a buzz far beyond their actual location.
To begin to tell the story, I encouraged the development of
a unique logo for this specific branch of the brand. Taking the lead to design
it, and incorporating it into interior/exterior
design was part of my vision for a complete design package and presentation. Extracting
from the story to create the logo seemed natural. The private persona was
becoming public.
As we developed the logo, featuring a wood-carved graphic of an original log cabin/smokehouse, the story was recorded and edited down to a summarized version.
It was available for printed material, social media, and as art to be presented on walls. Yes, it was intended to become a decorative element too.
The Story became a focal piece in the interior along with authentic, original photos of the log smokehouse and an interpretation of patchwork quilts entitled Urban Piecework made from leftover ceramic and porcelain tiles, glass and clay assembled in wall-mounted panels throughout the interior and exterior spaces.
Connecting with patrons, followers, clients, friends, family and acquaintances is valuable. As a business, it wraps who and those elements that are important to you in a familiar cocoon of context. It can instill a level of comfort and confidence in addition to sparking additional interest that might have taken longer to establish, without the introduction of your story.
It was a privilege to promote, extract and produce this story and contribute such an important and valuable element to this business’s marketing and solidifying it’s new, exciting chapter of their brand.
Consider your story. Own it. Share it. Celebrate the uniqueness of your story. Design with your story in mind.
Collecting art, investing in art, loving art, designing with
art…one aspect or all of the above, art in interior design has many facets. I
have written previously about and presented a workshop about “I want a
piece of art to go with my red sofa,” a kind of raspberry in the face of curators,
collectors, critics and appraisers who would never take or condone that
approach. But the desire and need exists and as a interior designer it is
wonderful to work with artists who can and want to respond to cues, take on
commissions and create for specific parameters.
Contrary to opinions from the high-brows, this is not to say that these artists lack artistic integrity or meaningful self-expression. Their value is as any other – determined by what the market will bear. The basis for this writing is that we work with many artists who love their work. And creating it (even under direction) brings them and their patrons joy.
Featured here is the up-lifting, colorful and texturally abstract
work of Patricia Forbes. We have enjoyed commissioning her for specific
interiors over the years and are never disappointed in the quality and creativity
of her pieces.
With so many mass-produced art offerings at the trendy home
decor stores, it is refreshing to encounter new clients who are at the start of
their nesting years, establishing their own domains, selecting things that
bring them comfort and identity and who’s appreciation lies in acquiring original art.
Designing an interior is about comfort and personal identity. It is about surrounding oneself with things that work – both functionally and aesthetically. Individual’s requirements, in either of those departments, can vary greatly – but suffice it to say, each person or couple or family unit creates a home environment based upon their likes and needs (and budget).
Enter the interior designer. When calling on the assistance
of someone outside the intimacy of the home, the client is hoping for and
expecting a successful custom-tailoring of their requests based upon the
experience of the professional.
When designing an interior, it is exciting to use existing
pieces already owned by the client. It is gratifying to arrange and place those
items in ways not yet imagined – thereby justifying the investment in design
consultation. After an intense session of rearranging furniture, artwork and
decorative accessories the “ta-da” moment is one of near instant
gratification and satisfaction.
When an interior needs a little something to pull it
together, fill a gap, create an accent or establish a focal point, it is great
fun to engage the creativity of an artist to custom design a piece to fit the
need. Approaching an artist for the express purpose of acquiring a piece of their
work to enhance a space is an exciting
venture. It is a personal connection between artist and patron that creates a
communion, a bond.
Color, texture, size, style, subject (or not) all are aspects of art that are to be considered for the personal interests of both artist and patron. If the patron has selected an artist to approach about a commission it is as a result of experiencing their work and appreciating it. The artist, in response, is to accept the parameters of the request and enjoy the challenge and process of creating the intended/desired finished product.
Forbes’ creativity is rooted in pattern, color and texture.
Primarily non-objective, her pieces are compositions of movement and dimension.
Working with a layering technique, she builds her action with a collage of
papers and fibers, paint and stain. Action is key when describing Forbes’ artwork.
She creates for herself, but when called upon to collaborate
on a project, her eager curiosity for what might result is enthusiastic and
ever-promising. About her style and self-expression she states “When I
have created a joyfulness and vibrancy in the work, I know I ahve created an
experience I wish to share.”
When asked…
1. How/when/why did you start your abstract technique of
layering colors and textures?
Forbes has always been drawn to color as a means of her personal expression, once she “experimented with acrylic materials that would hold a texture and started playing with those using combs and rubber spatulas and sticks to mark in the materials” she was hooked. “Metallic and interference paints call to me — so I began to combine the over the textured backgrounds, and then discovered that with acrylic one could imbed paper. It was really experimentation and discovery of what these amazing materials could do…”
2. What is the most satisfying aspect of your art for you personally?
The
element of surprise is what gets Forbes excited! “When something comes
together almost unexpectedly and I wonder how I did that — it’s always a search
for the right combination of elements, colors, textures, feelings.”
When they all come together she experiences great satisfaction. “It’s
like turning over pieces to see what fits. Sometimes I have to turn over a lot
of pieces to get the right combination — sometimes wondering whether to
continue. Seems like it is always worth continuing the work to a happy
conclusion.”
3. Why do you enjoy commissions to create specific pieces
for interiors/patrons?
Forbes
expresses genuine gratitude for her patrons. “I feel honored and
appreciated when someone likes and appreciates my work and invites me to do
something special for their home or office space.”
4. What pleases/satisfies you about this custom commission process?
The
process of working together with her
patrons is positive creative challenge. “I enjoy the collaborative aspect
and going through the process with a client or designer and receiving their
feedback as the work progresses.”
The
satisfaction for a designer in partnering with an artist is designing and realizing
a vision to complete a space. Bringing visions to reality. I often say that my team provides tremendous
support in making my dreams come true. From artists and craftspeople to seamstresses
and all manner of contractors, it is truly a team effort to achieve great
results!
We are excited to have the opportunity to bring a design installation(s) into a new project that will serve to support the brand with a twist. A nearly completed new smokehouse is coming to Albuquerque. This home-grown eatery blends family history and southern roots with southwestern barbecue flavors including indigenous wood and iconic chile blends. But this is not about their cooking profile. It is about how we have arrived at a design theme that will define and further the identity in this new, specialized smokehouse department of this larger local brand.
To accomplish this task, we examined the concept the owner had to remodel an existing facility that had been a popular gathering post serving this community for decades. The fringe barrio location was of a demographic primarily comprised of Mexican/Americans. Decades past it was home to a heavily black community. The fabric of these cultural combinations suggested a mosaic of color and vibrant heritages.
The spark of cultural references lead to discussion of the popular artistic expression of urban mural painting.
When we began the dialogue, the decision to have a mural painted by local neighborhood kids, with a mentor to design and supervise the work, seemed to be the direction we were headed. After subject matter debate and development, I veered off on another tangent that might take a less subjective approach, be weather-proof and more durable for a patio location – mosaic.
This new more impervious and durable medium still offered the opportunity to engage the community, but with less focus on a specific subject and more about geometric color and texture. We discussed the details of installation so as to keep it simple for kids to participate using whole tiles – minimize cutting, if any, for starters.
Inspiration came from several other installations such as the Albuquerque Convention Center’s on-going mosaic mural project wrapping many sections of the buildings with intricate scenes of New Mexican lifestyle and cultural diversity. The colorful mosaic is an elegant and sophisticated contribution to our city’s cultural aesthetic.
Helen Atkins, manager of consignment art at PATRICIAN DESIGN’s downtown boutique gallery and the lead on their current restaurant mural project, has worked on several phases of the Convention Center’s mural project.
We have incorporated mosaic into several of our own design projects such as last week’s blog https://patriciandesign.com/trust-and-custom-designs/about a residential kitchen installation.
Here, in another installation, a fireplace surround of mosaic adds movement, color and textural interest to the room.
Ultimately, one of Helen Atkin’s personal photographs cemented the approach. It was decided that a geometry of different sizes and disparate glazes and designs of tiles pieced together in a colorful, textural panel would be our design theme.
Helen Atkins, a recognized artist in many media, captured this in passing while visiting New Zealand. It’s crisp, yet irregular composition was intriguing and pleasing. It became the springboard for the concept for a geometric mosaic panel to anchor the theme of this new New Mexico eating establishment.
The idea became more exciting as we began gathering material from local tile distributors and our own personal inventories of favorite treasures saved for a special project. Here it was. It seemed such a strong design element and therefore offered a new direction for the actual brand of this establishment. We embraced the idea and brought it into the interior and distributed murals throughout the space.
Still under construction, we will not divulge the identity or locations of this project just yet. But suffice it to say, the murals are an exciting part of this interior design scheme.
As we further discussed the plans to implement this project, school started and the ease of coordinating the assistance of neighborhood kids became more difficult. Helen lead the project as primary installer, coordinator and supervisor. She enlisted the assistance of a couple of people – one experienced and the other not at all.
We have named this series, Urban Pieced Work – an artistic narrative. Here we are interpreting generations old sewing patchwork using ceramic, glass and pottery pieces rather than the traditional fabric patches. The original folk art needlework has been in the American vernacular for ages. In these installations, this up-cycled use of discarded or discontinued tiles is similar to patchwork fabrics, re-purposed to make clothing, wall decor, window treatments and bed dressing when times were tough – often referred to as “pieced work.”
My paternal grandmother in New Mexico made this twin quilt for my bed when I was a child in Virginia.
My same grandmother made this and was given to me by my cousin, her only other granddaughter.
Mosaic is often, like fabric patchwork, a practical art form that puts scrap, shards and fragments to good use in an artistic fashion. Note though that more sophisticated mosaics have been designed more intentionally for centuries not merely as salvaged material. These masterpieces both in contemporary work and antiquities represent many periods in history and movements in artistic expression.

This week, upon arrival at the Denver airport, as I navigate this architecturally dramatic facility, I’m funneled with the masses making our way, from the gate area, to the trains, to the terminal. When suddenly, gracefully overhead as we ascend the escalator, large versions of paper airplanes hover above. Probably steel, but with the familiar fold and form of the simple paper origami originals, they were a whimsical attention divergence.
When I arrived at the top of the escalator, I realized that they were also above the escalator across the way so I walked over there (to the surprise of the masses with whom I had been funneling along). A couple in the crowd even called out “hey” or “ma’am” …I turned to see some were concerned that I had lost my way and expressed concern that I follow the pack. I waved to these helpful strangers indicating with my phone in hand that I was stopping to take a photo of these wonderful suspended planes.
This ignited a curiosity that led me to investigate a bit more. I have since learned that they are part of the Denver International Airport’s Arts & Venues Denver: Public Art Program 1994. There are 140 of these suspended would-be-paper (steel alloy) planes and they are the work of artist Patty Ortiz titled Experimental Aviation. A well-recognized artist and curator of contemporary art with decades of art management experience she “believes that art intrinsically is a social object and when placed as an action in relationship with the viewer ad participant that art carries a profound interconnectedness within real experience.” And there I was experiencing the simple loveliness and joy that these airplane sculptures conveyed, in context with the often monotonous air travel experience.

Paper airplanes are timeless tools of communication set flying from one person to another often with a secret note inside. Unfold and discover the message. Like passenger pigeons of days gone by…but unlike their obsolete and ultimately extinct message-delivering cousins, paper airplanes are timeless.
Never taking up the art, it has fascinated me forever. Origami seems to be originated from the Japanese word for folding – ori – and paper – kami = Orikami. Japanese art is so fine in all of its forms. And back to the paper airplanes, San Francisco hosted a competition Origami-Palooza complete with education and presentation of many facets of origami work including the Paper Airplane Challenge. Last month “The Paper Airplane Guy,” John Collins, the world record holder for paper airplane distance was there to assist in honing your paper airplane folding skills to insure greater success with your paper airplane flying! https://japancentersf.com/events/origami-palooza-great-paper-airplane-contest/
My happy observation of this past week and my advice with it – grab a piece of paper and try your hand at folding and flying a paper airplane!!!!!
While in Park City this weekend, I pondered what might the subject of this week’s story be. Dazzled by the smart presentation of this hidden little jewel of a town, I was continuously remarking about the fresh abundance of flowers, well maintained facades, manicured lawns and medians and the obviously collective appreciation for what draws patrons to want, if not need, to invest in property, art, clothing, home decor and food! Yes, need – it can become an imperative!
Here a restaurant has dressed their facade with brilliant red flowering boxes beneath the sidewalk window.
Oh – oops…do you think it might have been the Ferrari that was drawing attention?
Imagine your patrons being drawn into your establishment as an imperative – a must see, or must buy here, or must try this place, or must check out their wares, or must taste their food or drink their craft beer!

You see this charming presentation potential in small resort communities and those who have cultivated their assets to the max, reap the benefits of their vision, smart development and on-going maintenance.

The architecture is decidedly mountain themed, vintage 19th century colorful and textural, but interestingly punctuated by modern elements and fresh ideas. The practical pitched roofs, quaint scale, textural wood trim and detailing, all contribute to this charming scene.

To dismiss the value of flowers in marketing is to ignore the Flower Power!
Some places take a little more work to grow seasonal sprays of abundant color in pots, buckets, bowls, barrels and boxes, but the effect of drawing people is undeniable.

From Key West to Anchorage, the results are proven. Beauty, color, nature sells.
It’s a combination of color being a visual POP amidst concrete and brick, but it is also the positive life-affirming statement that it projects.
We know color in advertising is a draw and we know that anything that adds animation is a draw – flowers colorfully animate the street-scape and draw customers to them.
Here the passers-by are drawn to the menus posted in the window by the red geraniums that brilliantly are placed in planters in front of them.

They infuse the built environment with nature.
Like hummingbirds swiftly hone in on the finest blooms or like bees collecting pollen, we are drawn toward that which speaks visually from the surrounding foliage.

Texture is another element in this mix. We know that good design is about balance. Flowers balance the otherwise hard surfaces in their periphery. The finishes on a streetscape or sidewalk scene are generally, if not exclusively, hard. Flowers soften the surrounding surfaces and also balance the smooth and hard with random shape, texture, flexibility and even movement.
Whether a casual bar or fine dining restaurant, retail shop or any business wanting to attract and invite the public to them, flowers are an asset.
I feel about flowers similarly to how I feel about twinkling lights on a patio or in public trees. The advantage in the lights is that they can survive the frigid elements and make their statement in all seasons. Lesson here – once the plants are spent for the season, keep the lights on!!! Both elements are valuable draws and enhance the atmosphere of any establishment or environment. (Go back and notice how many photos have visible stringed lights in them!)
And if possible, plant those past-season pots with hearty pansies, ornamental kale or evergreen shrubs to keep the life calling from the sidewalks.

A potted evergreen will add life to the paved surfaces when the flower season has passed.
And for the sake of broadening the reach on this subject, to include not only the flowers and the mention of stringed lights, is the inclusion of creative signs, banners, flags, umbrellas and other elements that contribute to the festive nature that attracts peoples interest and draws them into your business.

When you think about finishing a wall, you probably think about paint colors…you might think about a wallcovering – wallpaper, or even a mirror – I’ve previously noted how mirroring an entire wall can exponentially expand a room – a dimensional effect/illusion that suggests the room extends well beyond its actual size. But another wall treatment, with which I LOVE to play, is tile!
All over the world, the art of designing and creating decorative finishes with tile has been evolving for centuries. All cultures have utilized mud and clay, glazes and fire to bake beautiful patterns and colors onto geometric slabs. Shapes of rectangular, square, octagonal, dots or diamonds – the geometric shapes are many and the designs are limitless.
As is true with other wall treatments, I prefer not to stop on an outside corner. I believe that the color or material should suggest a built mass – part of the architecture. To stop on an outside corner suggests a veneer. It proves that the finish on the element is not a structural/integral part of a built mass. When you paint into an inside corner and stop, it allows the mass the read as though solid and not merely superficially treated. The same is true with tile. Don’t stop it until you get to an inside corner – if possible. There are situations that force a finished edge on the flat plain of a wall – but avoid outside corners at all cost!!
This entire shower is tiled floor to ceiling, around the pony wall, bench…no door…it reads like a built environment of stone tile.
Think of the surface as an architectural element. Tile from floor to ceiling, inside corner to inside corner – wrapping corners, if needed, along the way.
Take a backsplash…customarily used to do just that – catch splashes at the back wall of a wet area (sink) countertop…bathrooms and kitchens, behind sinks and between upper and lower cabinets – but why stop there?
The entire back wall of this kitchen is mosaic marble tiles in a herringbone pattern.
Think of it as a true wallcovering – wallpaper. Commit to the entire surface. Here are more effective examples…
The backsplash and entire adjacent wall were covered in glass mosaic tiles. It “reads” like wallpaper.
here again, the classic blue and white Talavera tile backsplash is continued along the entire wall from floor to ceiling.
We are currently working on a couple of kitchen projects that will soon be completed. They both use tile liberally. Each quite different from the other. Stay tuned for the finished products!
In bathrooms, the area around a mirror can be more than merely the backsplash. Embed the mirror into the tile surround or tile the entire wall and hang a mirror on top of the tile surface.
This mirror is flush with the surrounding tile, suggesting that it is embedded into a tile wall.
Planning this transformation, the mosaic vase was the inspiration. Then loose tiles were scattered on the countertop and the concept began. Note, the existing mirror was attached to wall with light fixture mounted above it and a medicine cabinet off to the side.
The transformation involved removing the medicine cabinet, taking the floor tile up the wall and wrapping it floor to ceiling. It was also cut into smaller squares to use behind the sink as a “full-wall backsplash.” Then punctuated with glass and glazed tiles to create an updated design. Relocating electrical to flanking the mirror for a pair of new sconces and a new countertop, faucet and sink with existing cabinets painted resulted in a cost-effective design.
Here a mirror is mounted on top of the fully tiled wall. Inside and outside of the shower enclosure the tile is a true wall treatment.

Here is a mosaic mural of a dynamic geometric abstraction discovered in New Zealand. We are using this inspiration to establish a theme in a current restaurant project. An interpretation of this in the form of geometric tiles of various sizes, colors and patterns will be used to create a cohesive repeated design element through various areas of the restaurant – both inside and out. Watch for this completed project in coming months.
Commercial restrooms can benefit from full-wall tile treatments too. Not only does it look complete, but it is an ease of maintenance consideration.

Fun with color and texture, tile are also easy too keep clean – terrific for public restrooms.
Murals are also terrific ways to use tile as art in your interior/exterior designs!
This is embedded into the stucco for an integral installation.
When using outside though, remember to consider the range of temperature and moisture to which it will be exposed. Porcelain is the most durable in areas where the temperatures get to and below freezing. Freezing and thawing can destroy tile. Many murals are made from clay that is not suitable in cold climates!
